For those looking for recreation, there is a wide variety of water sports activities available, from windsurfing, kayaking and snorkeling, to deep sea fishing and diving expeditions.
Broaden your horizons and gather a taste of the country’s traditional culture, heading just north of the bay to find the market of Mahebourg. The market is busy with stalls selling spices, traditional Mauritian clothing, vegetables and local food. There is nothing quite like it.
Tamarin Bay
Tamarin Bay is located on the west coast of Mauritius, next to the Rivière Noire (Black River). The beach is relatively secluded, with its means of access limited to crossing over just one bridge, but once you get there you will never want to leave.

For visitors looking for a spot of surfing, the bay is host to some of the rougher waves to catch with two popular spots; Dal and Black Stone.
Although the beach is full of life throughout the day, it is even more so at night as younger tourists and locals arrive with tents and light up small campfires to gaze at the bright moonlight glimmering across the calm evening water.
Gris Gris
Gris Gris is based in the most southerly point of Mauritius, just outside the village of Souillac. Compared to many of the tranquil beaches and lagoons on the island, Gris Gris has no reefs close to the shore; leaving the Indian Ocean pounding wave’s against the nearby Roche Qui Pleure cliffs with all of its might.

Though the beach is not necessarily suitable for swimming, there is no denying that the privacy, coastal views and sounds of tumbling waves will provide an excellent scene for a great day out.
Grand Baie
The Grand Bay or ‘Grand Baie’ is situated in the north-western region of the island, around 25km from the capital Port Louis.
If you visit the area, be sure not to miss out on the intimate La Cuvette Beach. The beach is close to the fantastic Royal Palm Hotel and is home to some of the stillest emerald waters on the island.

The selection of activities around the bay is endless: with areas for safe swimming, sailing trips and various water sports. There is also an underwater sea walk and submarine excursion available to witness another world beneath the water.
If you are looking for more adventure, the bay is also the departure point for day trips to five other islands to the north: Gabriel Island, Round Island, Serpent Island, Flat Island and Gunners Quoin.
Ile aux Cerfs
A short boat trip from the east coast to the Ile aux Cerfs Island is one of the most popular beaches in Mauritius. There are plenty of mainland boat services, so access on and off the small island is not a problem.

The lagoon, like many others, has heavenly white sands contrasted with the mesmerising view of a shimmering turquoise-blue sea and is surrounded by swinging palm trees.
Ile aux Cerfs also has a broad array of local restaurants and bars, sure to appease any palate and quench any thirst and an energetic bazaar to accommodate all of your shopping needs.
