Australia’s southern coast is home to many wonderful beaches, interesting sights to see, and fabulous food to eat. Adelaide has all of these. Conveniently located toward the center of the south coast, travel to and from Adelaide is easy. Being the capital of South Australia, it is also the country’s fifth largest city, and with so much to see and do, a long weekend might not be enough time to enjoy it all. You will undoubtedly want to extend your stay. There is no shortage of fun activities to do and interesting places to see, but if pressed for time, here are a few suggestions by area of interest.

1. History

Adelaide is rich in history, including its significant railway presence. The National Railway Museum Port Adelaide is a fun and interesting stop to make to learn all about Australia’s railway system and history. For a broader exposure to history and culture, visit the South Australian Museum, which features exhibits displaying everything from ancient Aboriginal culture to fossils, and even a giant squid. These are both great family destinations and have excellent accommodation choices nearby, such as the exquisite historic Mansions on Pulteney and the contemporary Hotel Richmond.

2. Art

The Art Gallery of South Australia boasts some of the most interesting and diverse art collections in all of Australia. Current exhibits span multiple areas of interest, such as abstract art with its Mind’s Eye collection, and human body awareness with the My Body and I exhibit. If you are looking for accommodations that offer both value and elegance, try the award-winning Majestic Roof Garden Hotel.

3. Gardening

A quick stroll from Adelaide’s City Centre will lead you to the Adelaide Botanical Gardens for an impressive array of Victorian landscaping, exquisite plant displays, and even fascinating glass buildings that represent various significant architectural styles. For a home away from home experience, try staying at the Athelney Cottage Bed and Breakfast located in eastern Adelaide near the Botanical Gardens.

4. Wine

Some of the best wine in Australia comes from the southern region and Adelaide is no exception. Barossa Valley is one of the oldest wine regions in Australia and is home to some of the most well-established wineries, including Wolf Blass, Peter Lehmann, and Penfolds. Known primarily for its rich Shiraz, the region has attracted international attention over the last few decades. The scenic surrounding area, just a short 30 minute drive from Adelaide, has some of the finest bed and breakfast accommodations available. The Louise Barossa Valley and the Abbotsford Country House will both offer welcoming homes and cottages so you can enjoy the breathtaking beauty of the area.

5. Chocolate

There may be no better way to end a perfect day than with rich, decadent chocolate….and Haighs Chocolates is the perfect place to find chocolate of all types. Whether you enjoy the classic milk chocolate that melts and lingers in your mouth, or dark chocolate truffles that go perfectly with wine or coffee, you can watch it all being made if you join in on the regularly scheduled tours at the Haighs factory. If even the smell of chocolate makes you happy, then you will not want to miss this.

As you can see, Adelaide has so much to offer – whether you are looking for a quick weekend getaway or an extended vacation, you will not be disappointed. The beaches are long, sandy, and relaxing; the food and wine are top-notch, and the attractions will satisfy almost every interest. The only difficult part is that you will not want to leave.
