Macdonald Hotels in the North West have introduced a new apprentice scheme for young people to kick start their careers in hospitality.
The Macdonald Hotels Hospitality Academy will guide young people on a fast-track ‘The Apprentice’ style training course over 12 months.
Marie Pollock, Training and Development Manager for Macdonald Hotels & Resorts, said: “There are high numbers of young people not in education, employment or training. However, the hotel industry offers a superb career for those with a hard-working attitude.”
The youngsters aged 16 – 18 were interviewed and shortlisted to a final selection. They will be put through their paces in real life hotel scenarios in every department from catering to housekeeping and reception.
Trainees can then select the area of the hotel industry they would like to concentrate on and achieve a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Hospitality qualification.
“Our training is very thorough and provides the foundation to a great career in hospitality so we look for apprentices with enthusiasm, personality and most of all, a great work ethic.”
5 hotels are involved in the scheme including Macdonald Manchester Hotel & Spa, Macdonald Manchester Townhouse Hotel, Macdonald Tickled Trout in Preston and Macdonald Kilhey Court in Wigan.
Abigail Green Morris, aged 17 from Manchester is one of the young people involved in the scheme.
She said: “I love working as part of a team and really enjoy providing amazing customer service so Macdonald Hotels feels like the perfect match for me.
“I could have chosen to go to university but I am ready for the world of work and this way I can learn all the skills I need for my chosen profession while on the job.
“We have the opportunity to try out food and beverage, front of house and housekeeping, so by the end of nine months I’ll have a really good idea of what I am passionate about.
“I enjoy coaching hockey, so I can’t wait to take these skills and become a great manager in the hotel industry and help more young people progress in their careers in the future.”
Macdonald Hotels has 13 hotels in the North West, each with its own unique style and individual character and were recently awarded AA Hotel Group of the Year 2013/2014.
