Four Seasons Resort Langkawi is Southeast Asia’s first UNESCO Geopark – a geological and ecological wonderland where labyrinthine mangroves entwine with pure rainforest air and ancient rock formations embrace endless beaches. Inspired by the diverse location, rich traditions and natural elements, the Resort’s wide-ranging list of activities and excursions offer family fun for everyone – from the energetic, educational and eco-adventurous to the romantic, relaxing and rejuvenating (because Mum and Dad are part of the family too).
Family Fun
With its two pools, Water Sports Centre, kids club and restaurants all flanking the same mile-long stretch of beach, the Resort is the perfect playground for families who want to spend all day dipping in and out of a variety of activities.
Water sports include jet-skiing, water-skiing, wakeboarding, inflatable tubes, stand-up paddle boarding, catamaran sailing, windsurfing and kayaking. Just a few metres off the beach, a natural 12-metre limestone outcrop offers four different levels of rock-climbing to suit varying abilities and ages (from 5 years old) and a thrilling abseil back to terra firma. The Resort’s archery range enables archers (from 12 years old) to practise holding, aiming and shooting with a recurve longbow and full-size target board, supported by a certified instructor.
The highlight of many a family vacation, the Mangroves & Eagles Safari is a magical naturalist-led eco-exploration directly from the Resort’s beach that offers up-close encounters with majestic eagles and kites, mischievous macaques, fish that walk (mudskippers), colourful fiddler crabs, shy otters and sleeping bats – all from the comfort of the Resort’s boat. Other family highlights include cycle tours to local villages, Robinson Crusoe-style private island picnics, bird-watching safari drives in search of giant hornbills and thrilling ascents to the top of the Machinchang mountain range via the Langkawi Cable Car – one of the steepest in the world.
Kid-Specific
There’s just as much to keep kids entertained away from the family fold. The complimentary Kids for All Seasons club is always a hive of activity with a daily changing program of activities from batik painting and kids yoga to nature excursions and treasure hunts, not to mention its own adventure playground.
Kids can also embark on their own parent-free Mangroves & Monkeys Safari with the Resort’s Swamp Skipper; sign up for a Junior Masterchef cooking class with some of the island’s top local chefs; learn how to make and fly their own traditional Malaysian kite; and enjoy an Introduction to Rock-Climbing – an action-packed jungle afternoon of mini rock-climbing and abseiling activities supervised by highly experienced staff.
Adults Only
With the bab-sitters booked prior to arrival and the wee ones happily ensconced in the kids club, adults will find ample opportunities for their own precious “alone time.” First stop has to be the Adult Quiet Pool – a blissful oceanfront haven complete with eight private walled cabanas and grown-up goodies including Margarita ice-moulded shot glasses. Next on the list, the Geo-Spa beckons with its award-winning Raja and Ratu (King and Queen) couple’s ritual, which uses local essential oils to transcend traditional pampering and help couples reconnect physically and emotionally. As day turns to night, the sunset-stained seafront becomes the stunning setting for the ultimate romantic dining experience beneath an ornate Rajasthani tent set for two.
Family Friendly
The perfect family holiday demands the perfect family space in which to enjoy it. A home away from home, each Family Beach House is accessed via a quiet garden path that also leads to a private plunge pool overlooking the Andaman Sea. The large outdoor deck caters for open-air dining and daybed lounging, while the beach is just steps away for sandcastle-building, starlit bonfires and toasted s’mores. Inside there are two large living areas, a four-man spa bath, indoor and outdoor tropical shower rooms and a family-size walk-in closet. Children’s bedrooms come complete with LCD screen television, PS3 game console, beach toys, sandcastle-making kits and board games.
And Finally
Family Beach Houses are located within easy reach of the landscaped Family Pool. Really four pools in one, it offers different areas and depths (for maximum privacy and safety for all ages) alongside waterfalls, fountains and underwater jets. Little fish can come up for air and take a break to enjoy cool poolside treats including frozen-filled chocolate mango bon bons and fruit truffle popsicles. The only challenge will be getting them to leave.
