A burgeoning Tasmanian tourism venture is expanding to meet increasing demand, particularly from Asian visitors, with new investment from the Turnbull Coalition Government.

Curringa Farm will receive $450,000 from the Federal Regional Tourism Infrastructure and Innovation Fund, administered by the Tasmanian Government’s Department of State Growth.

This funding will add to Curringa’s total $1 million expansion of the popular farm-stay and farm tours site at Hamilton, which won the gold medal at the 2015 Australian Tourism Awards for the Hosted Accommodation category.

This investment will ensure Curringa Farm can expand to meet demand, with this funding going towards the construction of three accommodation cottages at the farm. Without this funding Curringa Farm has said it would have been forced to defer the expansion for some years, losing valuable tourism opportunities.

Work is now underway, and once complete will create as many as five full time jobs in the central highlands region and increase visitation to Curringa by the thousands.

This will create a huge flow on effect for other local operators and suppliers from the local stores, hotels, Mount Field National Park and Nant Distillery at Bothwell. This will boost the regional economy and creates jobs.

The expansion will also capitalise on Tasmania’s burgeoning agri-tourism market. Our local producers, farmers markets, food and wine trails are a huge part of our appeal, with more than 348,000 travellers visiting a local producer in the past year, that’s up 13 per cent in a year.

More and more visitors want to know the people behind our produce, how it is made and where it is made, and fortunately we have amazing people with great stories and experiences to share, like Curringa farm.

This is especially popular with the significant number of Chinese visitors travelling to our state, who want to share in our culture and way of life.

This is not just good for tourism, it’s good for our primary producers too, who are diversifying and securing another income stream, which supports investment and jobs, particularly in our regions.

Curringa Farm is the latest in a string of great tourism ventures to receive funding through the $4.4 million Regional Tourism Infrastructure and Innovation Fund, aimed at creating and supporting tourism infrastructure across Tasmania. This will go a long way to helping us to reach our target of attracting 1.5 million visitors to the state every year by 2020.
