The temporary removal of the renowned Molly Malone statue begins today. To facilitate the Luas Cross City works along Lower Grafton St. the iconic statue will be moved from her current location by the end of the week. The RPA are also taking this opportunity to carry out some much needed repair, cleaning and conservationist work on “Molly” so she will be off our streets for about six weeks.
However, the Luas Cross City team and Dublin City Council agree that such is Molly’s popularity, that as soon as repairs are complete she will be back on the street. It is anticipated that the statue will be back at the beginning of June in time for the peak tourist season. She will be placed outside the Dublin Tourism Information Centre, Suffolk Street for the duration of the works.
The work is being carried out by a specially appointed heritage contractor with the input of specialists in conservation, historic stonework, bronze and transport.
To ensure the safe and efficient removal process, RPA has carried out extensive pre-work surveys including laser scanning and detailed examinations of the condition of the bronze and surrounding stone plinth. These examinations have revealed some wear and tear (common to public sculpture) that will necessitate repair and conservation works.
