These are both great questions and can easily be answered with a little bit of research and some planning!
The first thing you should do is pick out bedding for the nursery. If you have a certain theme in mind, let that inform your search! If you have no clue what you might like, find bedding that you love and draw inspiration from it.
There are so many options when it comes to bedding. If you’re on a tight budget check Craigslist and your local yard sales. There are actually great yard sales online that you could look into. If you buy bedding secondhand take it to the dry cleaners or throw it into the wash to make sure it’s germ and toxin free. Another cost effective option is to ask your friends and family members if they have crib bedding they no longer use…someone might have a set they are looking to sell/giveaway!
If you can afford to spend a little more money on brand new bedding, try Babies R ‘Us and Buy Buy Baby. These are just a few of the many places you can purchase nursery bedding. Another one of my favorites is Pottery Barn—they always have a really nice selection!
Once you choose your baby’s bedding, it’s time to decide the colors of your furniture and walls! Pull colors from the bedding to choose which color to paint the walls. For example, if you decide to go with a “zoo animals” theme and the colors in the bedding are orange, grey and green, you could choose neutral grey paint for the walls and then add pops of color with curtains and wall decorations. Or you could pick a bold color like orange for the walls (as shown in the photo). My personal favorite in nurseries is pale or light green –it tends to make the room feel nice and warm while bold colors can sometimes be harsh and uninviting. Although, bold colors are thought to enhance development and encourage growth in newborns, so it really is up to you and what you prefer!!
**Make sure you choose baby safe, fume free paints. Ask your local paint store which they would recommend or try places such as lullabypaints.com for paint specifically for babies.
A fun way to add some flair to your nursery is to have a mural painted on one wall. If you have a zoo theme, a scene full of animals painted on the wall would be awesome. If you know someone who likes to paint in their spare time, ask them to paint the mural. Or, you can find a local painter and hire them! Another cheaper, easier way to achieve a similar look is to purchase wall decals. We used them in my son’s room, and they were a big hit. His room is truck themed so we purchased fire engines, loaders, airplanes, etc. for the border in his room.
