Outside the House
After a summer of outside BBQs, sprinkler fun and fire pits, your outside area is ready for a good cleaning:
• As the leaves fall, sweep your decks, put down your umbrellas, clean and put away your outside furniture and organize children’s summer toys in weatherproof bins.
• Take a look at your deck, does it need paint on the trim, railings and desks? If so, add a touch of paint. If paint is flaking off, use a wire brush and remove it before adding a new coat of paint. Also, consider using a sealer as a topcoat—this should minimize the wear and tear of snow, salt, sleet, ice and other winter messy-ness.
• Winter brings cold weather, so check the caulk around doors and windows, and re-caulk if needed. This will keep the cold air out and save money on your heating bill!
• If your doors don’t close properly, go to your home improvement store and ask about weather-stripping. This will also keep the cold air out and the warm air in.
• Wash all your outdoor windows.
• Turn off the outside water– before you do this, drain all the water out of the hose. Make sure all water is out of the hose completely then wrap up the hose and put it away for the season. If you have outside sprinklers in lawn, you may want to have the water blown out, this prevents frozen and burst pipes.
• Check gutters as the leaves continue to fall – they could get clogged. You definitely don’t want to climb on your roof in the winter with ice and snow in order to fix clogged gutters.
• Clean your chimneys before you have your first fire of the season.
Inside the House
Since cold weather means you’ll be spending a lot of time inside, you might want to take a weekend to clean the inside of your home.
• Start with ‘public’ rooms such as your living room and kitchen. And begin at the top. Get your dust buster out and grab all the cobwebs on the tops of cabinets and corners. Don’t forget your ceiling fans, they collect dust as well.
• Next wipe down your photos and artwork – either use a duster or Mr.Clean and some warm water.
• Spray and clean your windows. Also, don’t forget to wipe your blinds.
• Move items off shelves, wipe them off and then dust the shelves.
• In the kitchen use Mr. Clean and warm water plus a wire brush for the hard to reach stains and spills, it works great!
• Take out the vacuum – vacuum couches, corners, and then move all furniture and get behind them.
• Flip all of your mattresses and rotate them.
• Check your furnace and change filters to maximize and save energy for the winter weather.
• Clean and replace humidifiers.
• Schedule an expert to come and clean your furnace before winter begins.
There’s a lot to do before winter, but you have a few months if you start now – so don’t procrastinate any longer. Start with these few tips and if you have any more you want to share with our readers, please comment below!
