About the Airport
Formerly called Dum Dum Airport, it is among the busiest ones in the country in terms of overall passenger traffic. It is situated around 17 km from the main city and reaching here is not an issue with availability of buses and taxis on a regular basis. In terms of size, it is second largest in the eastern part of the country and one among the two in the state. Along with the local authorities and Airports Authority of India (AAI), the cargo-handling capacity at this place has been increased to meet the growing demands of import and export in this region.
Terminals
Terminal 1 serves domestic flights to Kolkata of major airlines of the country with ease. Expansions were made to it in 2009 to cater the increasing influx of travellers. The international carriers are catered at Terminal 2, which has adequate infrastructure to meet the requirements of international passengers. It also serves a cargo terminal, featuring a huge warehouse. With proper security measures and total surveillance in place, export and import goods are stored here.
Facilities on Offer
There are a number of shops and food outlets inside the premises, where travellers can shop for books, electronic gadgets and other necessary items. Availability of tea, coffee, snacks and even meals make it easier for passengers waiting for a flight to board or those waiting for their in-direct flights. There lies a shopping mall in the vicinity of the airport, where travellers can go and spend time in case their flight is delayed or scheduled after a few hours. In addition, there are cafes and food stalls outside the building where people can eat.
Inside the building, there are various duty-free shops where passengers can make a purchase for different items at a reasonable price. Items that can be purchased over here include magazines, handicrafts and much more. Important service on offer here is the baggage wrapping facility, which is available at the international departure area.
Connectivity
The distance from the Howrah railway station is about 16 km while from Sealdah railway station is around 18 km. People can hire taxis or opt for bus services to reach here without any hassles. Even from state transport bus depots, reaching here is not an issue at all. The bus and taxi charges are quite reasonable, but pricing eventually depends on the distance to be covered to reach here.
