The
sporty new SE version of the Toyota
Camry is attracting younger drivers in a major way, even
though, of course, it's never had a problem with sales. The Camry has been the North
America's best-selling car for quite some time now, and now it's more popular
than ever. Through July of this year, Camry sales have been up 40 percent to
244,000 units- 60,000 than its competitors: the Nissan Altima and the Honda
Accord.

Overall, Toyota sales are up 28
percent so far this year, topping 1.2 million vehicles and gaining almost two
points of U.S. market share. A large part of the increase is due to last year's
shortage of vehicles after the earthquake in Japan crippled the company's
factories. Supplies are now back to normal, however, and Toyota is back on
top.

So far this year, Camry buyers have been between an
average age of 51 and 52, which is almost nine years younger than last year.
Almost half of buyers this year are under 4, which is up 34 percent for last
year's model, with the sport edition ("SE") accounting for 40 percent
of overall sales. As Bob Carter, Senior Vice President of Auto Operation in the
U.S. for Toyota explains, "That's what's driving it down, bringing the
younger buyer in. We didn't anticipate that much movement in the
demographics."1
