When it comes to Jessica Jones almost nobody knows who she is.  If you have never heard of Jessica Jones don't feel bad you are in good company.  In truth, I had no idea who she was until she began appearing with Luke Cage in New Avengers.  I was intrigued on who Luke Cage would choose to settle down with and began buying her initial story called Alias through E-bay.  Through my reading of Alias I really fell in love with the Jessica Jones character.  In my opinion she is one of the greatest, unknown characters of the Marvel Universe.   Why is she unknown? Three big reasons:

1) Jessica Jones is new, she first shows up in the comic Alias in 2001.  In comic book standards she is a baby.

2) Her name Jessica Jones does not excite people and have the name impact of Wonder Woman, or Marvel girl.  The titles she has been in have never carried her name Alias, Pulse, Avengers, etc. To my knowledge she has never appeared in a comic titled Jessica Jones. Her name Jessica Jones is also often confused with Spider Woman's alter ego Jessica Drew.

3) Her initial title Alias was the first of Marvel's Max line that allowed for mature themes and cursing.  However, because of this sales were limited to only adults.  For this reason I get a little iffy on whether to even post panels from Alias because I don't want to get in trouble.  I think many people at the time thought that Alias might by risque, which is why it received the Max designation, but it really had primarily to do with cursing and content.  For this reason many do not know about Jessica Jones or her run in the title Alias.

Why was Alias part of the Max line, why was it the first one?  Alias was ground breaking, and very original in how it used super heroes to tackle serious and often times dark issues.  Yes, a variety of dark stories like Watchman, and Spawn exists but Alias was a little different.  It was not trying to be as heady and intellectual as Watchman.  It was not trying to be as shocking as Spawn.  Alias was simply trying to be real.  If I made a list of greatest titles that nobody read, Alias is somewhere at the top.
Since, Alias was not getting enough readers they moved the story to a title called the Pulse.  The Pulse was still heavy but dropped some of the cursing to keep the Max label off of it.

For how much I like Jessica Jones, I have always struggled with how to explain her.  Last week I was watching TV with my wife.  She has gotten into a show called Veronica Mars (Holy crap is it good btw), and the realization hit me like a super punch to the face....Jessica Jones is Veronica Mars with super powers.  Both are cute, intelligent girls who get faced with the darkest parts of world's seedy underbelly, and must carry on, keep a brave face and use their skills to help others.  Both Mars and Jones are battered, and emotionally messed up.  Both have pretty exterior shells that hide insides that have been shredded in a meat grinder.  They are not bad people, and they refuse to be seen as victims.  Despite, the emotional toll both are capable, witty and drawn to helping others.

Jessica Jones Bio:
Jessica's Bio reads a bit like this tragedy, heart break, tragedy, tragedy, pissed off but still heroic, more tragedy, tragedy, picks self up, still heroic, tragedy.

Jessica Campbell is cute, intelligent (nerdy), high school girl who has a crush on fellow student Peter Parker.  She finally gets the nerve up to talk to him, but he is rude and ignores her.  For some reason he seems worried about being bit by a freaking spider.  While driving in a car with her family they crash into a military truck carrying chemicals.  Jessica goes into a coma, when she awakes she learns the rest of her family died in the accident.  She is adopted by the Jones family and changes her last name to match.  She is also changed physically in other ways, she has super strength, increased but not quite impervious durability, and an erratic capacity of flight.

She doesn't fit well into school.  Flash Thompson bullies her.  Peter Parker tries talking to her, but she sees this as pity and she lashes out at him.  An inspirational moment occurs when she sees Spiderman battling a villain.  She believes she has the duty to begin using her powers for good and becomes the super hero Jewel.  Jewel does not have a very long heroic career.  It really is not known exactly what she does as a hero but at some point she does befriend then Ms Marvel, Carol Danvers.

Jewel responds to word of the Daredevil villain known as Purpleman troubling a restaraunt.  Purpleman is just a plain out evil dude with a power that makes him even more vile and disgusting.  The Purpleman can control people and make them do whatever he wants.  He takes control of Jessica at that point and holds onto her for 8 months.  During the 8 months under his control Jessica is not physically violated herself.  She is however forced to watch as the Purpleman molests, violates, harms, kills armies of victims.  Purpleman also makes her beg that it was her he was molesting.  This mind control goes on for 8 months.  Finally, Killgrave is angered when reading about the heroic exploits of Daredevil and sends Jessica out to kill Daredevil and any other costumed hero she meets along the way.  Though the Purpleman's mind control pheromones begin to wear off she continue to follow his orders like a drone, perhaps due to Stockholm syndrome, perhaps as a result of being controlled for such a long duration.  She attacks and beats the Scarlet Witch and the Avengers swoop in.  The Vision is enraged that someone hurt is wife and swoops in for the kill.  While Ironman and Vision enclose around her, Jessica is jarred out of the Purpleman's control Ironman and the Vision do not know who Jessica is, nor do they understand she was under mind control, they simply know that she hurt the Scarlet Witch.  They beat the living hell out of Jessica.  Despite, having super strength and at least some super durability she suffers severe injuries.  Finally, one of the heroes who knew Jessica, Ms Marvel swoops in and saves her.

As Jessica recovers from the near fatal beating the Avengers gave her, she is horrified to learn that no one noticed she was missing for 8 months.  Nobody was looking for her at all.  If the Purpleman had not sent her off on his deranged mission she could have continued to be his slave.

Jessica struggles to come to terms with all the terrible things that have happened to her.  She finds meaning in her life as a detective, a journalist striving to help those in need.  Along the way she finds an ally, friend and eventual husband in the Hero for Hire, Luke Cage.  Now a mother, Jones continues to navigate the shadowy roads of the world hoping to help those in need.  Always on her mind are the risks, and dangers of her path but like an adrenaline junky she can not leave it behind for long.

A couple that stand out are the "Jewel and the Power Man" that is sure to feature Luke Cage.   Also Ladies Night may feature Patricia Hellstrom aka Hellcat who said to be one of Jessica's super hero friends.  My guess is "It's Called Whiskey" will feature her drinking and thinking about the abuse by the Purpleman.
