The Cango Caves of the Western Cape, South Africa are at the head of the Cango Valley, 29 Km from Oudtshoorn in the Klein Karoo. Upon entering the caves, you could easily believe that you have embarked on a surrealistic journey to the centre of Planet Earth. You’ll find the finest dripstone caverns, with their vast halls and towering formations. You enter via Van Zyl’s Hall. It’s a huge cavern, 90 m long, 50m at its widest, and between 14 – 18 m high. Ancient stalactites, resembling dried tobacco leaves adorn the grey-blue of the limestone ceiling. Next there is Botha’s Hall, dominated by two completed columns. A formation resembling a Giant Eagle feeding its chick catches the eye. Then you ascend via a staircase, past a hollowed out stalagmite known as The Pulpit. A narrow passageway takes you into the Rainbow Chamber. Against the back wall, in the eerie glow of lights you’ll recognize the profile of the head of Old Nick, the tame Cave Devil.

For this journey you can choose from Standard (easy) or Adventure Tours. Tour guides can lead you in English, Afrikaans, German, French and other languages depending on availability of guides. Booking is essential due to the increasing popularity of the Cango Caves.
