2015-05-07

For many, the guilty pleasure of election night is seeing established parliamentarians suffer the righteous indignation of losing their seats in Westminster.

Chris Patten in 1992, Michael Portillo in 1997 and Lembit Opik in 2010 all live long in the memory of politicos across the country revelling in a falling political giant. And this year there could be a bumper crop...

So who are the candidates hoping to bring down a big guy in 2015? And at what time is it likely to occur?

1.Oliver Coppard (standing against Nick Clegg)

Constituency: Sheffield Hallam

Expected result time: 04:30

33-year-old Oliver Coppard hopes to unseat the Lib Dem leader to become Labour’s first MP in the Sheffield Hallam constituency. Coppard works in the former coal mining communities of South Yorkshire for the Dearne Valley Eco-Vision project. A constituency with a dense student population, Coppard has credited his young activists as central to his recent campaigning momentum. Team Clegg are confident of hanging on, but Coppard is hoping to convert the two point lead he saw in April’s Lord Ashcroft polling.

2. Drew Hendry (standing against Danny Alexander)

Constituency: Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey

Expected result time: 05:00

Hendry, 50, is a former director of a multinational appliance manufacturer. He also founded Inverness-based digital marketing firm Teclan Ltd, becoming the first private sector company in the city to commit to paying all staff the Living Wage. Having represented the Highland Council ward of Aird and Loch Ness since 2007 and been the Council leader since 2012, Hendry is no stranger to Scottish politics either. The ousting of top Lib Dem Alexander in this seat looks to be a realistic prospect  - a Lord Ashcroft marginal poll in February found the Scottish Nationalists on 50% with the Lib Dems on 21%, a swing of 25.5% in favour of the SNP.

3. Matthew O’Callaghan (standing against Nicky Morgan)

Constituency: Loughborough

Expected result time: 03:30

Labour prospective candidate Matthew O’Callaghan, 62, is fighting to overturn Tory candidate Nicky Morgan's majority of more than 3,000 earned at the 2010 election. O’Callaghan began with a career in academia; obtaining a doctorate in chemistry at Birmingham University before working at the University of Louvain in Belgium and relocating to South America where he became professor of Animal Sciences at the University of Costa Rica. Following a move to the private sector, O’Callaghan worked for the pharmaceutical company Fisons, based in the East Midlands constituency. O’Callaghan remains a freelance international business consultant, having worked on projects in countries such as Japan and Brazil.

The Education Secretary's concerns have been somewhat assuaged by polling in April 2015 by Lord Ashcroft that saw the Tories increase their lead from three to nine-points in Loughborough.

4. Margaret Greenwood (standing against Esther McVey)

Constituency: Wirral West

Expected result time: 05:00

Margaret Greenwood, 66, is Labour’s prospective candidate seeking to drive Tory Employment Minister Esther McVey out of parliament after serving a meagre one term. Following a diverse career with jobs in teaching, travel writing and currently as a web consultant, Greenwood is said to be a committed campaigner actively involved in the local Wirral West community resisting the Coalition’s “dismantling” of the health service, being a founder member of the pressure group Defend our NHS. The signs look ominous for McVey in recent Lord Ashcroft polling, with Labour increasing a 1% lead in October 2014 to 5% in March of this year.

5. Nick Palmer (standing against Anna Soubry)

Constituency: Broxtowe

Expected result time: 03:30

Nick Palmer, 65, Labour’s candidate for Broxtowe, previously held the seat from 1997 for the entirety of the last Labour government, before Tory candidate Anna Soubry acquired it in 2010. During his tenure as MP, Palmer served as Parliamentary Private Secretary to Margaret Beckett in the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and Malcolm Wicks in both the Depart of Trade and Industry and latterly in the Department for Business. A multi-linguist, Palmer claims to speak six languages and holds a background in research in artificial intelligence. Palmer is currently director of policy for the animal protection organisation, Cruelty Free International. Two 2014 Lord Ashcroft polls found Labour ahead of the Defence Minister in Broxtowe by 14-points in May and nine-points clear in July.

6. Mhairi Black (standing against Douglas Alexander)

Constituency: Paisley & Renfrewshire South

Expected result time: 03:00

Mhairi Black is a lifelong resident of the Scottish constituency and has been politically active from a young age; marching against the Iraq War and volunteering for charities including Oxfam. Uniquely, Black has not yet completed her undergraduate degree – the 20-year-old is in her final year studying Politics and Public Policy at the University of Glasgow.  Should Black convert the eight-point lead a February Lord Ashcroft poll gave her over Labour's Shadow Foreign Secretary, she would become Westminster’s youngest ever MP. Black has courted controversy during her campaign, declaring that she had fantasised about “putting the nut” on Labour councillors and referring to No voters in the independence referendum as “gullible” and “selfish”. Despite this, if Black does maintain the 25% swing in favour of the SNP in Paisley & Renfrewshire the victory would surely be a significant loss to Labour.

7. Kirsten Oswald (standing against Jim Murphy)

Constituency: East Renfrewshire

Expected result time: 03:00

Kirsten Oswald, 42, is currently a senior human resources professional in the further education sector. A resident of the constituency since 2008, Oswald only joined the SNP in June 2014 and was a committee member of the Women for Independence group in East Renfrewshire. A History graduate from the University of Glasgow, Oswald’s professional interests include employee engagement and equalities. According to the Scottish Herald, Oswald has raised almost £6,000 for her campaign through crowd funding website, Indiegogo, after she appealed to nationalists to help her "kick Jim Murphy out". April's Lord Aschroft poll of marginal Scottish seats saw a 26.5% swing towards the SNP against the Scottish Labour leader, with the Scottish Nationalists now nine points clear in East Renfrewshire.
