Horror-inspired extreme metal is a love affair of mine, but it seems to be declining in popularity as of late which is a shame, because the lyrical content and atmosphere of this niche style is amazing. However, Canberra based death/grind outlet Inhuman Remnants are set on reviving the horrorcore scene with their latest EP, ‘Anathema’.

IR waste no time and dig straight into face-melting double/triple bass pedal sections, powerful grind riffs and vocals so screeching and harsh you could mistake them for Varg. The first track, and the title track, is nothing but aggressive death metal mixed with some grind elements such as extremely quick shredded riffs and nuclear blast beats. These two styles actually work incredibly well and give Inhuman Remnants a really unique, no-holds-barred sound.
The second and third tracks, ‘Bleeding’ and ‘Absolution Of The Apocalypse’ offer a lot of variation to the sound laid out in the first track, both incorporating a lot more melody which is a welcome relief from being pounded by thrashing chug riffs and machine-gun drumming. These tracks also seem to be a lot darker, with the guitars providing a somber and otherworldly atmosphere. The only negative I noticed on this whole EP is that the vocals are completely indiscernible at some points. The vocals are excellent, but they become very crowded in the mix and you can’t make anything out.
With some production work, I can see Inhuman Remnants getting widely recognised for this unique sound they bring to the table. If you’re a fan of both horror and extreme metal, you should be buying this already.
