Applications are now open for the 2015 Fish O Mania series which will once again be screened on Sky Sports. Five of the sixteen qualifiers take place in the Midlands region; starting with Moorlands Farm on April 25th; Makins Fishery on April 29th; Tunnel Barn Farm on May 2nd; Boldings Pool on May 27th and Woodland View on June 17th. It all leads to the Grand Final at Cudmore Fisheries on Saturday July 18th. Applications must be made online by going to http://www.anglingtrust.net/ and clicking on the Competitions tab. It will certainly be over-subscribed with successful applications drawn by ballot.

Dates and venues have been announced for the 2015 Canal & River Trust Stillwater Championships. It will be the eighth running of the event, with 40-peg qualifying rounds to be held between April and September, with four anglers from each going through to the final at Blythe Waters on October 10th. There will be three qualifiers at Boddington, three at Blythe Waters, one at Kiverton Waters and two at Earlswood Lakes. The full list of dates and venues can be seen on the Total-Fishing.com website. Tickets at £25 are on sale on the Angling Trust website. David Kent from the Angling Trust said: “This event is now well established as a top event on the coarse match fishing calendar, attracting some of the best anglers from the stillwater match scene in addition to others who are trying big match fishing for the first time.”

The Bell Otters Fishing Club based in Oldbury, West Midlands is looking to recruit new members. The club is affiliated to the Birmingham Anglers Association and fishes a mix of river, pool and canal matches on local waters. Anyone interested (you must be a member of the BAA) should contact Paul Pountney on 07534 453102 or lilah89@hotmail.com. Members should note that the price of a senior BAA club book is rising by £5 this year.

Good luck to Steve Cullen who is leaving his position as editor of David Hall Publishing’s Total Fly Fisher for a new role in the tackle trade with Leeda. Steve made the position and the title his own and will be hard to replace. I’ve had meetings with Leeda recently and they really are a the company who is pushing forward tackle developments in match, carp and fly fishing more than any other, including leading the way in fish health safety. Under new owners Madison they have ambitious plans including a new tackle trade show in early 2016 at the base in Milton Keynes.

Members of Leamington AA are being asked to be on the lookout for fish thefts after a vigilant member found two carp sacks containing double figure fish tied to the leg of a fishing platform at Ryton Pools. A suspect vehicle was also seen and details have been passed to the police for further investigation. Anyone who sees anything suspicious is asked to call the EA Hotline on 0800 80 70 60 or Anthony Simmons on 01926 312319.

At Packington Somers Fishery regular visitor Johnny Johnson of Birmingham has been showing how it should be done when it’s cold like this by fishing the bomb and bread out to the middle stumps and catching carp from Geary’s Lake. His best day last week saw him catch nine fish to 12lb. The ice at the weekend affected the fishing with roach and skimmers giving reasonable sport on some pegs, particularly along the high bank from 1-11. Float fished maggot, pinkies or caster has worked best.

Another angler to work with the power of bread in the clearer water was Dave Elliott, who won the biggest match of the weekend – the winter league at Tunnel Barn Farm. Dave pole-fished bread by dobbing it to the island at 16 metres to catch F1s to 1lb 8oz and carp to 4lb from Club Pool peg 22 for a 78-1-0 total, which was less than 4lb too good for second placed Steve Nightingale, who weighed in 74-10-0. Team Guru lead the league from Match Fishing Drawbags.

I’m sad to report the sudden death of Birmingham Anglers Association bailiff and well known angler Shaun Chaney at the age of only 37. Shaun was a regular visitor to Coppice Lake and the Birmingham-Worcester Canal, where he had only recently taken on the responsibility of bailiffing for the Association. Shaun was taken ill at the weekend and admitted to hospital, where he passed away with 48 hours. “We would like to pass on our most sincere condolences to Shaun's wife Vicky, children Shaun jnr and Mollie and all his family and friends in their moment of loss,” said a spokesman.

Dates have also been announced for this year’s UK Angling Championships, with two Midlands venues involved. Nigel Harrhy, who runs Barston Lakes at Solihull, is once again stepping in to do the organisation with the prestigious match fishing event being shown on Sky Sports. There are five matches in this points-based competition that stretches way back to 1984, one each at Lindholme Lakes, Viaduct Fishery and Larford Lakes and two matches at Barston, including the final round on August 26th. Entry is online at www.ukanglingchampionship.co.uk .

If you dream of catching a double-figure barbel or a 20lb zander, a forthcoming Severn Rivers Trust event entitled ‘Fish The Magnificent Severn’ in Worcester could set you on the right track, when some of the country’s top river anglers will be giving an intensive course on how to get the most from the Severn. Among the speakers is John Costello – the only angler in history to take a 20lb zander and a 40lb pike (from a non-trout water). The zander, taken from the Severn, remains the second best ever caught in the UK. Also on hand is Des Taylor, one of the best known all-rounders in the country and a former winner of the Angling Writer of the Year Award. Another well-known speaker, with a particular passion for the Severn, is Dilip Sarkar MBE. A pike and zander specialist he is a former president of the Pike Anglers’ Club of Great Britain, and has appeared on Sky Sports’ Tight Lines. Dilip now works for the Angling Trust as Fisheries Enforcement Manager. Alongside the distinguished speakers there will be stands manned by fishing organisations and tackle dealers, but the big attraction is the chance to listen and talk to some of the country’s finest anglers. Fishing the Magnificent Severn takes place on Saturday 28 March 2015 at Edward Elgar Building at Worcester University. Admission (£7) will be by ticket only.
