Summary:

Ian Chillcott, Rae Borras and Des Taylor are among the names fronting up BT Sport's first angling show.

Midlands big fish man Des Taylor is to star in a new fishing series on BT Sport. The weekly programme, called The Fishing TV Show, will feature coarse, carp, sea and game angling and is described as ‘a celebration’ of the sport with every episode ‘oozing all the positive aspects and experiences that you get while out on the bank’. It’s actually a deal that I helped get going when I was working for the channel, and will hit the screens in September. Des said: “The world is as better place when there are new, exciting fishing programmes on the TV, and this is just what the sport needs. I’m honoured and really looking forward to being part of the project because I have so much to give.” Meanwhile a new series of ‘Robson Green; Extreme Fisherman’ starts on Quest on August 4th and will air every Monday at 9pm.

A quick thinking angler saved the life of a teenager who got into trouble while swimming in the Blue Pool at Telford. The 15-year-old was pulled from the water by an un-named fisherman before being attended to by West Midlands Ambulance Service, whose spokesman Rob Marsh said: “When the ambulance crew arrived, the boy coughed up one and a half litres of quarry water. He was taken to Princess Royal Hospital where he was dealt with by the resuscitation team.”

Pete Bennett has set a new silver fish match record at Solihull’s Barston Lakes with a 175lb bag. Pete drew peg 48 on the in-form venue where he fished sweetcorn and pellet on long pole tactics. The skimmer bream were there straight away and he kept fish to 4lb coming for the match win and new record. More information on the complex at www.barstonlakes.co.uk .

Eighty fished the sell-out 2014 Barston Bowl, which produced two ton-up weights. The match had a later draw time of 11am, with fishing 1pm to 6p,  and this improved the sport. Mick Bull was the first to put a big weight on the scales, and everyone assumed he would win with a 134lb bag of mainly F1s from peg 80. That was until Phil Hardwick went over the 150lb mark from peg 123, picking up £1000. Phil said he planned to take his family on holiday with his winnings.

Young anglers are being encouraged to join some of the best canal anglers in the country in a new national event. The Canal Championships will take place on the Shropshire Canal at Soudley on Sunday September 14th, with anglers between 12 and 16 invited to compete in their own competition alongside the adults. The junior part of the match is free to enter and the event will also feature free angling tasty sessions for anyone who would like to learn about canal fishing. Closing date for entries is August 15th. For more details email sandra.drew@anglingtrust.net or call 0115 906 1301.

Midlander Angie Lawler struck a blow for girl power when she landed a huge catfish at Linear Fisheries. The West Bromwich angler was fishing a pink pop-up topped off with corn when she hooked into ‘something massive’. But with great skill she tired the monster out after a 20-minute battle. She will never know the true weight of the fish – it instantly bottomed out her 75lb scales – but it was estimated at a whopping 90lb!

Anglers fishing on the River Severn around Gloucester have been in for a treat this week as they’ve found themselves sharing their swim with a dolphin. Marine conservationists are keeping a close eye on the mammal, which was first spotted between Stonebench and Elmore Lane just south of the city. In 2009 a porpoise died after getting stranded on Maisemore Weir on the Severn.

I have more details of the 170lb catch taking at Packington Somers last week. John Duncan took the massive bag during a Mallory Boys float-only match, fishing 14.5m pole and worm to the island on Peg 16 on Gearys Lake for skimmers and carp to 12lb. Although it’s the biggest weight ever taken in a match on Geary’s, it won’t count as a record as it was taken in a six-hour event and only five-hour matches count. The lake record is a 166lb catch weighed in by Wayne Sharman, although Suzy Smith had 169-15-0 last month in a four-hour evening event. The fishery record stands at 177-15-0, caught by Wayne Carter on Molands Lake.

The Midlands is to host this year’s Pike Anglers Convention, with predator anglers descending on the Ricoh Arena in Coventry on September 27th – it’s been held in Harrogate for the last two years. Speakers will include big fish specialist Bob Roberts and there will be many tackle stands plus junior coaching available. For more information visit www.pikeanglersclub.co.uk .
