Soon after BSF soldier Tej Bahadur Yadav posted a video on social media complaining about poor pay, food and other facilities, Army Chief General Bipin Rawat has said that the soldiers must raise the issues internally.

He also said that he will investigate the matter if needed.

He said that whoever has any problem, can post their complaints to suggestion and grievance boxes. He said the letters in these boxes will reach to him directly.

“If a soldier writes to us regarding his grievances penning down his identity; will ensure that his identity is not made public. If he is unsatisfied with the action taken, he can choose other ways (of voicing his grievance),” General Rawat reportedly said.

Gen Rawat described social media as a “two-sided” weapon which can be used favourably but can also be detrimental.

The Army chief was right in saying so. Here’s why

1. Airing grievances in public is against the service rules.

2. Going directly to Army chief rather than opting for social media is a good option as the problem (related to systems) has to be settled internally.

3. Raising voices in inappropriate channels can blow the issue out of proportion in a public debate, when all it needed was proper grievance redressal.

4. It may lower the ethical and professional standards associated with the organization.

5. It is preposterous to suppose that anything but the worst management could have brought this situation

6. There are maters that the Army needs to review in an objective and candid manner and there may be a case for an independent commission to review.
