MIDLOTHIAN, Va. – Nearly 200 student-athletes will compete Tuesday and Wednesday in the Warrior National Prospect Invite here at the River City Sportsplex.
To provide an additional way to get “best in class” high school student athletes in front of prominent NCAA lacrosse coaches from every division, LEGACY Global Sports launched the National Prospect Invite. This two-day lacrosse showcase is presented by Warrior Sports, a premier manufacturer of high-performance, cutting-edge gear for lacrosse athletes. The event features 130 boys and 60 girls.
To be eligible to participate, high-achieving “uncommitted” high school lacrosse players from the 2018 and 2019 graduating classes were nominated via the National Prospect Invite website. Nominations were free of charge and open to anyone, including parents, family, friends and the players themselves. Accompanying each nomination was a coach referral attesting to that individual’s athletic acumen and personal character.
An independent panel of coaches, school administrators and recruiting experts evaluated all nominations, and then selected a diverse group of high school boys and girls that demonstrated exceptional lacrosse skills and sportsmanship on the field, achieved a certain academic standard, and displayed integrity and respect in the classroom and community.
“What makes the National Prospect Invite so exciting is that it provides NCAA lacrosse coaches with a terrific opportunity to scout uncommitted ‘best in class’ players that have met a rigorous selection criteria,” said Chris Boland, general manager of the National Prospect Invite. “We’ve made it easier for coaches to find outstanding talent for their colleges and universities by prequalifying the student athletes and giving them a two-day lacrosse forum in which to demonstrate their skills.”
Boland explained that the event features both elite instruction by NCAA coaches as well as showcase games. Many college coaches are expected to attend the event, which precedes the Brine National Lacrosse Classic.
“We understand the showcase piece for these kids in the summer and the need to showcase their talents in front of college coaches,” Boland said. “That’s what players pay for. But we believe strongly in the instruction and development piece, not only for player development but for the importance of having college coaches get the chance to watch kids go through shooting drills, stickwork drills and footwork drills.
In addition to playing, we think those two things go hand in hand and we believe that is missing from the showcase mentality. This is a way for us to draw the best players and get great instruction and great hands-on teaching from good coaches.
“I think that piece is a selling point not only for players, but coaches as well. They want to get to know them. They want to know if the player is coachable and if he or she is a a good teammate and a good leader. If they see those things in a hands-on setting rather than from the sideline, it’s a whole different experience.”
