Today’s Throwback Thursday post returns from October 2014.  It has been update and expanded to help you improve your SEO today.

Have you ever gotten lost trying to find a business?  It happens every day on the internet.

How’s your website performing?  When you check your site stats (and you do check them, don’t you?), are you pleased with what you see?  If not, maybe it’s time to consider search engine optimization.  SEO helps you get higher rankings and higher rankings help others find you on the internet – we’ll break this down shortly.

First, as the image above suggests, SEO can be complicated.  There are so many parts to the SEO picture that it can be overwhelming for beginners and even seasoned internet marketers.  Is there an easy way to do SEO?  Yes and no.

Doing SEO analysis can include calculating keyword density, permalink structure, template optimization, readability, title optimization, image optimization, conversion optimization, comment optimization, copyscape integration, and many other elements.  Yes, SEO enhancement can be complicated and incredibly time-consuming, but it doesn’t have to be.

Did you know that the Google Page Rank algorithm considers over 500 million variables? While each search engine has its own proprietary page ranking algorithms, there are some elements that are common to all of them.

Fortunately, for WordPress sites there is good news: according to yoast.com, WP is “one of the best, if not the best content management systems for SEO” on the web.  Mashable is one of the highest rated websites in the United States and worldwide, and they use yoast.com’s WordPress SEO plug-in.  I use it and I recommend it to you.

Using the Youst SEO Plug-in

The yoast.com plug-in is free and it’s worth the short amount of time that it will take you to install it on your site.  Here’s how it helps:

First, the Yoast plug-in gives you the opportunity to edit a snippet that will be used by search engines to identify your content.  Second, you can and should enter a keyword which is very important for SEO.

Third, Yoast SEO analyzes your content and gives you bullet points on what is good (green button), what is okay (orange button), and what definitely needs improvement (red button).  There is also a Readability score with similar analysis.  Use these two evaluations to improve your content and your SEO will be improved.

Why should you care about SEO?

Paying attention to SEO is one way to improve your business’ return on investment.  SEO is a very important part of advertising and marketing on the web because search engines are an important way that people can find your business.

Second, SEO is the most effective and cost-effective way to increase your footprint on the internet.  It can also increase your business and personal branding.  With good branding, you can increase your traffic, sales, and profits.

Third, to not pay attention to SEO is to give your competitors a competitive advantage, and that’s just bad business.  Do you really want your potential customers and clients finding them rather than you?  If your competitor’s website ranks higher than yours, whose site are your potential customers and clients most likely to view?

So, how important is SEO to you?  I hope that you can see that SEO is extremely important for the success of your internet business.

I welcome your comments and questions, your likes and shares.
