The first installment in our “Atlanta Landmark Restaurant Series” begins with just that, The Varsity which opened its doors in 1928, and never looked back.
To read the menu of the Varsity Restaurant is to take a step back in time to an era when the term “fast food” was not a part of the American English lexicon. A time when the automobile age was still in its early adolescent years. The Varsity has grown from its original restaurant opened by Frank Gordy on on 70′ by 120′ lot, to multiple restaurants. The current downtown Atlanta property can accommodate 600 cars and 800 people inside the restaurant.
The volume of food prepared daily is legendary. Their website boasts of preparing, “Two miles of hot dogs, a ton of onions, 2500 pounds of potatoes, 5000 fried pies and 300 gallons of chili are made from scratch daily.” It isn’t unusual for there to be three to six deliveries a day to the restaurants. Its “Curb Men” who sing the menu for the parking lot customers are legendary and use a system of identifying cars by number in order to get the right order to the right car quickly. They are a primary reason for the success of the business to this day
The Varsity has relied on a simple formula for its success: a razor focus on freshness, high quality products, a reliance on technology and delighting its customers by serving the best food fast, at very affordable prices. For a truly memorable experience, any of The Varsity restaurants in the Atlanta Area should be high on you list of priorities when visiting the Big Peach.
