Last Monday, the Animal History Museum announced that it will open its doors this Spring to a 5,300+ sq. ft. location at the Burbank Town Center in downtown Burbank.

The newest addition to Southern California’s museum scene, the Animal History Museum’s mission is dedicated to understanding and celebrating the human-animal bond. “Like the way natural history museums explore fossils and science, we’ll explore interactions and relationships,” says museum founder and Executive Director, Amy Breyer.

Until the Grand Opening later this Spring, the museum is planning a series of soft launch events. The series starts with a private, ticketed champagne toast at the space on Saturday, April 2nd. The museum hosts its first art reception on Friday, April 8th and Saturday, April 9th, featuring the animal-themed art of a dozen LA-based artists, curated by Chuck Wolf of The Wolf Fine Art.

SANTA MONICA

Students gather to highlight ballot campaign to ban bags

Marine life such as sea turtles will often confuse plastic for food. Join CALPIRG on March 24 in Santa Monica to make a difference.

On Thursday, March 24th at 1:30pm, joined by a 30-foot inflatable sea turtle, student environmental leaders from UC chapters of CALPIRG (California Student Public Interest Research Group) will travel to six cities during an alternative spring break to join elected officials who have championed bag ban efforts. The effort will highlight support for the campaign to Save the Ban on Single-Use Plastic Bags and to hold a series of beach and river cleanups.

These student environmental leaders will pledge their support to protect marine wildlife from plastic pollution and announce campaign plans. Students will also be conducting a cleanup of Santa Monica Beach.

A recent report by the World Economic Forum has warned that the oceans will have more plastic than fish by 2050 if we do not dramatically curb plastic pollution from single use bags.

This event is scheduled to take place south of the Santa Monica Pier, Ocean Front Walk, across from Hot Dog on a Stick. Visit CALPIRG.org to learn more.

Dungeness crab health advisory lifted  in Sonoma County

The health advisory regarding Dungeness crabs caught along the coast has been lifted from state waters in all areas south of the Sonoma/Mendocino County Line (Latitude 38° 46.1’ N, near Gualala).

California Department of Public Health Director and State Public Health Officer Dr. Karen Smith lifted this advisory due to recent tests showing that traces of domoic acid have declined to low or undetectable levels in Dungeness crabs caught near Gualala and Bodega Bay.

This partial lifting comes after the February 11th announcement lifting the advisory for Dungeness crab caught south of Point Reyes (Latitude 38° 00’ N).

The advisory remains in effect for Dungeness crab in state waters north of the Sonoma/Mendocino County Line (Latitude 38° 46.1’ N) and for rock crabs in state waters around Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, the San Miguel Islands and areas north of Latitude 35° 40’ N (near Piedras Blancas Light Station in San Luis Obispo County).
