Washington Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby is set to participate in the Capital Pride Alliance’s 2016 Capital Pride Parade on Saturday.

In conjunction with the You Can Play Project, Holtby will be joined on the 1.6 mile route by Capitals’ mascot Slapshot, Red Rockers, Washington Wizards Wizard Girls, Washington Mystics Energy Squad and Monumental Sports and Entertainment staff members, with all participants set to wear #RockTheRainbow shirts during the event.

“I am honored to represent the Capitals and participate in this important event that shines light on the contributions the LGBT community makes every day,” said Holtby. “I believe in equality for all people and I look forward to showing my support along with our organization and fans.”

This year’s parade has the theme of Make Magic Happen and is part of the Pride in the Nation’s Capital celebrations across the city and greater metropolitan area this summer.

More than 25 events have been planned to celebrate the spirit and strength in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) communities in Washington, D.C. and the national capital area.

The annual Capital Pride Parade draws around 150,000 spectators and travels through segments of the city important to the LGBT community. This year’s parade will include more than 180 contingents.

The celebration is organised by the Capital Pride Alliance, a non-profit group within the District of Columbia which has the purpose of supporting, celebrating and inspiring diverse communities through the annual Capital Pride events, and related activities during the year.

Capital Pride can trace its roots back to 1975, growing from a single block party to a city wide event today.
