King Nagarjuna who is master in performing devotional characters, has come up with ‘Om Namo Venkatesya’ with veteran director K Raghavendra Rao. After Annamayya, the famous quartet now tells us the little known story of Hathiram Bavaji in Om Namo Venkatesaya.
Story : From his childhood days, Ram (Nagrajuna) wants to make contact with the eternal powers of god. Excited Ram joins the ashram of Padmananda Swamy(Sai Kumar) in Tirumala and from there, he reaches the main temple in Tirumala. He starts praying the god and becomes an ardent devotee of Lord Venkateswara. Impressed by his devotion, Lord Venkateswara himself appears before him. One day, Ram falls in the trouble as the ornaments on the statue was found missing. The trustees of the temple doubt it on Ram and take him to King’s court. The king gives a punishment and Ram is faced with the danger of death. What happens next? How will Lord Venkateswara save Ram? How did Ram become Hathi Ram Baba? Where do Pragya and Anushka fits in this entire set up. To get these answers, one should watch the movie on silver screen.
Performances : Nagarjuna is the luckiest actor of his generation to essay the roles of Annamayya, Ramadasu and Hathiram. We cannot imagine any other actor in the role of a devotee. He brings believability to the characters with his intense performance. ONV will also be remembered as one of the memorable movies in the career of King Nagarjuna. Anushka is good as Krishnamma. Her performance in the climax episode is commendable. Saurabh Jain is convincing as Lord Venkateswara. He is so graceful. Pragya Jaiswal played a cameo. Jagapathi Babu also appeared in a guest role. Rao Ramesh is good as the villain. Vimala Raman as Padmavathi gets a good role and she does justice to it.
Analysis : When devotional films are considered to be a huge risk in today’s day and age, Nagarjuna and Raghavendra Rao take us on an emotional story of an ardent devotee in a simple yet entertaining manner. Nagarjuna gives an award winning performance as Hathi Ram Baba and holds the film completely. Breezy narration, good performances, and feel good scenes give this film a sacred feeling altogether. If you ignore the predictable story line of what happens in all devotional films, On Namo Venkatesaya is a film which will be loved the family audience.
