Shakti Soundar Rajan’s Miruthan, probably the first zombie adventure in Tamil, is by no means novel in the world of cinema. As early as 1932, Hollywood popularised Voodoo magic through this genre with the film White Zombie. Several others came in following decades including I Walked with a Zombie, The Plague of the Zombies and Night of the Living Dead.
Miruthan Movie Story : A virus springs up, it infects humans and spreads, turning everyone into a zombie. And then there is the main character (Jayam Ravi in this case) who tries to save the day. Miruthan pretty much has the same setting. But hold your horses as director Shakti Soundar Rajan comes up with his own twist and turns to make this flick watchable by Tamil audiences.
Performances : Jayam Ravi comes up with a refined performance. Kudos to the actor for not overdoing his job as a movie like Miruthan might force you to exaggerate things. Lakshmi Menon too, is a class act. Fear is an emotion that may grip you throughout this film and Lakshmi Menon helps accentuate that feel. Comic relief is provided by actors like R N R Manohar and Kaali Venkat. Comedy sequences have worked in parts, which is an added advantage amidst shooting and gore. Baby Anikha is impressive yet again. All other supporting actors including the ones playing zombies have come up with credible performances, for which the director has to be appreciated.
Analysis : It’s refreshing to see our own version of a good zombie movie. Thanks to Shakti Soundar Rajan, more such exciting films may be made in Tamil cinema in the near future.
