The Times of India Sports Awards, or commonly known as TOISA, are being conferred to several achievers in different sports categories on Thursday. The awards ceremony was held in a glittering event with all top performers of Indian sports and who and who of the Indian sports fraternity being present and honoured. Milkha Singh, who is also known as the ‘Flying Sikh’, is honoured with the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ from the ‘Olympian of the century’ and Times Group MD Vineet Jain.

Almost all categories of sports in which Indian athletes have been able to gain success and have garnered national and international fame, are being chosen to be awarded with the TOISA. Among other awards receivers, there was Jitu Rai as well, the Nepal origin Indian shooter, who has been declared as the Sportsperson of the Year at the event.

The presence of the legendary Carl Lewis, the former American track and field athlete, and former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly, the awards ceremony progressed with the achievers and award winners on different categories being named and honoured with the prizes.

The jury panel vested with the task of selecting the award winners comprised of former Davis Cupper Ramesh Krishnan, Olympic gold medallist hockey player Zafar Iqbal, World championship bronze medallist long jumper Anju Bobby George and Sourav Ganguly. The awards were being classified as Jury choice and popular choice in order to give equal importance to the common people too to choose the best and poplar performers.

Sportsperson of the Year: Jitu Rai (Jury choice); Youth Icon: Saina Nehwal; Billiards: Pankaj Advani (Popular Choice); Emerging Players’ Jury Award: Shooter Malaika Goel, Khushbir Kaur, Amit Kumar Dahiya, A Chikkarangappa, Sanjita Chanu and Vinesh Phogat; Cricket: Virat Kohli (Popular Choice); Cricketer of the Year Award: Harmanpreet Kaur (women); Football: Sunil Chhetri; Badminton: PV Sindhu; TT: Achanta Sharath Kamal; Athletics: Vikas Gowda; Wrestling: Yogeshwar Dutt; Squash: Dipika Pallikal; Golf: Anirban Lahiri; Chess: Viswanathan Anand; Hockey: Rani Rampal (women) and PR Sreejesh (men); Boxing: L Sarita Devi and MC Mary Kom; Tennis: Sania Mirza, Weightlifting: Satish Sivalingam.
