Floor plans, design, and décor all play an important role in the feel of any home, but there is another player in this game that is powerful…Color! From practical applications to psychological effects color can enhance your home in many ways. The colors you choose can even influence how the size and shape of a room is perceived. Every October, the design world waits with bated breath for the big reveal, what is the pallet of the year?

2017 is A Box of Jewels— with rich with deep onyx, ruby, taupe’s and dark grays. Benjamin Moore chose Shadow 2117-30. A rich, royal amethyst dripping in drama. “Allusive and enigmatic, Shadow is a master of ambiance. It is a color that calls to mind a ‘past’, yet it can also make a contemporary, color-confident statement,” Said Ellen O’Neil the Creative Director for Benjamin Moore.

Pairing this with sophisticated hues ranging from muted pales to saturated deeps. This pallet includes colors that evoke the natural earth tones,  Sea Star 2123-30, Sandlot Grey 2107-50 and Stormy Monday 2112-50 are part of the color trend pallet for 2017.

You may ask what is Sherwin-William’s pick for 2017?  Sherwin-Williams doesn’t usually like to play color favorites, but in this case they couldn’t resist.  Poised Taupe SW 6039 creates a cozy lifestyle and brings a sense of sanctuary into our homes. It diffuses the stresses of the world outside our doors — so much so that we feel restored and in balance when we walk across the threshold into our home.

Warm colors like taupe and browns can add a sense of comfort to a space, making it perfect for kitchens, living rooms, and other family gathering places. The story here is taupe combines a grey with a woodsy brown, creating a well worn color… like a distressed piece of wood where every scratch, crack and mark records a story, a memory.

On a lighter note…

Choosing a light paint color like white or pale gray for your walls makes rooms feel more spacious and expansive. This works especially well when these shades are paired with windows and mirrors, bringing in light to make a smaller space seem larger.

For a rustic feel, incorporate natural shades like warm browns and soft tans. If a modern look is more your style, try light grays and whites.

I love the warm tones in this patchwork hide rug from Poshrug. It lends itself beautifully to the natural feel of this space. Explore the world of color in your home and discover how a simple coat of paint or area rug can instantly change the look and feel of a room. Whatever your color comfort level, from small groups of accessories to a bold accent wall, color is a way to inject life and style into your design.
