For those who are avid fans of Thorpe Park, this may come as no surprise. However, for many, it is often interesting to discover that the site on which Thorpe Park is now built on was once a disused quarry that was filled with water with the intention of creating a water based theme park. This was put to one side after the land was purchased by a third party and the current Thorpe Park was opened in 1979.
Located in the Chertsey district of Surrey in the south of England, Thorpe Park has evolved over the years from a simple educational park that played host to many schools and young childrens days out into the third most visited theme park within the UK, attracting close to two million visitors each year.
Although many additions and improvements were made to the park throughout the years after its initial opening, it was not until 1998, when the Tussauds Group purchased Thorpe Park, that the park began to evolve into the fantastic attraction that is much loved today.
Prior to expanding and improving Thorpe Park, the Tussauds Group, to most people, had somewhat of a major problem to overcome. As the group was also owners of the nearby Chessington World of Adventures, many believed they would struggle to run both parks effectively. However, the Tussauds Group already had an idea and plans in place. Rather than create two theme parks that cater for all ages and needs, they had decided to create two separate parks, Chessington World of Adventures would cater for the family market, offering a range of rides to suit even the youngest members of the family, whilst Thorpe Park aimed its rides at one group, the thrill seekers.
Unfortunately, one of the major points that Thorpe Park is remembered by is not a happy one. In the summer of 2000, just two years after the Tussauds Group had taken control of the park; a large fire caused destruction to several rides and attractions in the park, completely destroying the Wicked Witches Haunt and Mr Rabbits Tropical Travels. Luckily, although 7,000 people were in the park at the time of the fire, no one was injured.
Of the copious amounts of rides and attractions that inhabit Thorpe Park, the most famous and popular is without doubt Nemesis Inferno. Deemed to be the sister ride of Alton Towers ever popular Nemesis ride, the ride is an inverted rollercoaster that sees the riders race around the track, as though escaping form a volcanic eruption.
Thorpe Park is a theme park that is a must for any thrill ride fan, regardless of where they would have to travel from. The park boasts a vast array of different thrill rides, offering a fantastic day out for even the most intense and dedicated thrill fans. Whether its a ride on Colossus, which features ten separate inversions, or No Way Out, the only rollercoaster in the world that moves backwards and is in complete blackness, it is guaranteed that everyones thrill levels will be pushed to the limit.
