The age old sports, archery is a bow and arrow game. The bow is used by the archer to propel the arrows that are targeted at an aim. In earlier times archery was also used for combat and hunting. Archery is now a very popular sport and the exclusive thrilling game is offered at many amusement/theme parks and getaways near Pune and Mumbai.
Types of bows used in archery
The basic design of a bow consists of one string that is attached and tied to an elastic plastic or metal. The limbs store the energy that is imparted to the equipment by the archer when he/she draws the string. Bows can be broadly classified into 2 types. The primitive types of bows require the archer to pull the strings directly while latest modern bows have a mechanism for pulling the string. The directly-drawn bows can be of various types including the laminated bows, self-bows, and the composite bows. The long classic bows are tall in design and have narrow limbs. These form a “D” shaped cross section. The flat bows have flat and wide limbs when they are unstrung and have a rectangular cross-sectional area. The more modified compound bows have a design that is crafted and created for reducing the force that is required to hold the bow’s string at its fullest draw. Archers employ lesser muscular stress during the use of these modern bows.
Types of arrows
A common arrow type consists of one shaft that has an arrowhead attachment at its front end. There are nock and fletchings attached to the other end that is held by the archer when he/she draws the arrow. The arrow shaft can be made up of a variety of materials including aluminum alloy, fiberglass, bamboo, solid hardwood, carbon fiber and other kinds of unique or composite materials.
Warping is the most common abnormality affecting wooden arrows. Brittleness affects fiberglass arrows. Bows having aluminum shafts are straight, light in weight; these high-performance arrows have fast speed and flat trajectory. Nowadays arrows made up of composite fibers are used widely in amusement parks and weekend getaways near Mumbai and in other places where official archery tournaments are held including Olympics.
The true functional component of an arrow is its head or arrowhead. Some arrows have a solid shaft sharpened tip. Separate arrowheads are now more common and made up of stone, metal or other kinds of hard components. There are different kinds of arrowhead forms available today, including field points, target points, and the broadheads. Other styles like blunt heads, judo, and bodkin, are in usage today.
Fletchings
Traditionally, bird feathers were used for making fletchings. The use of spin wanes is also prevalent. These vanes are attached at the rear ends (nocks) of the arrows by using glue, tape or sinew. In earlier times, at least, 3 fletches were used in arrows as the use of two made the arrow unstable during flight. An Arrow Fletching can have a shield or a parabolic shape.
String
The string of modern bows is made by using Dacron (polyethylene terephthalate) and other kinds of modified materials.
Protection
The most widely used archery protective gear is arm-guard or bracer. The bracer protects the arm from being hit by the arrow string and also prevents the archer’s cloth. The finger tab or glove (made up of leather) is used to protect the fingers. The modern bows are also equipped with stabilizers that are mounted on the bow’s front end (below its handle) so that the bow remains steady during its play operation.
A few weekend getaways near Mumbai offer you a complete archery arcade. They also employ professional experts to make your gaming experience secure and more educated. You get all the protective gears and have a lifetime of archery adventure sports experience here during your leisure time.
