*FREE Bellevue Arts Museum – Bellevue; 5/2; 11:00am – 8:00pm; Bellevue Arts Museum offers free admission the first Friday of each month, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

*Small Frye: Storytelling in the Galleries – Seattle; 5/2; 11:00am – 11:45am; Through a partnership between Frye Art Museum and Seattle Children’s Theatre, children use props, sound and movement to experience books from the inside, using their own imaginations. Visit the galleries after story time. Ages 3 to 5 with adult. *Maggie’s Diner – Seattle; 5/2 & 5/3, 7:00pm & 5/3 & 5/4, 2:00pm; Seattle Public Theater’s (SPT) Youth Program presents a world premiere of Maggie’s Diner, written by SPT Youth ensemble member, Frank Garland and directed by Gregory Award-winning playwright, Wayne Rawley.  7 p.m. May 2-3, 2 p.m. May 3-4. *Bank of America’s Museums on Us – Seattle; 5/3 – 5/4; Bank of America’s Museums on Us is offering cardholders a way to experience culture for free at some the most exciting cultural venues in the U.S. This weekend, May 3 and 4, Bank of America and Merrill Lynch cardholders can enjoy National Museum Month and get free access to 150 participating museums in 88 cities. *Boating Opening Day – Seattle; 5/3; 10:00am; Official opening of Seattle boating season features crew races (10 a.m.) and decorated boat parade with all sizes of boats from rowboats to Seattle Fire Department boats (noon to 2:30 p.m.). Parking available in University of Washington lots.

*Arbor Day Celebration – Snoqualmie; 5/3; 10:00am; Come for tree planting, free seedlings and activities for the whole family.

*Rely on Renton Family Fair - Renton; 5/3; 10:00am – 4:00pm; Demonstrations and entertainment, including an Eric Ode concert (11 a.m.), plus kids’ activities and family-related information booths.

*Free Family Days At Seattle Asian Art Museum  – Seattle; 5/3; 10:00am – 5:00pm; Admission to the Seattle Asian Art Museum is free on the first Saturday of each month for families.

*Saturday Family Concert: The Okee Dokee Brothers – Seattle; 5/3; 11:00am & 1:00pm; Award-winning American folk music for all ages. 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. $5, free ages 12 and younger with adult,  $25 unaccompanied adult.

*Story Time with Artist Hannah Viano – Seattle; 5/3; 11:00am – 12:00pm; Join Elliott Bay Books for a fun story time with artist and illustrator Hannah Viano! Take an adventure through Hannah’s paper-cut alphabet book, “S is for Salmon: a Pacific Northwest Alphabet.” Northwest characters will be introduced through reading, playful join-in actions, and touch-and-feel specimens. In the style of high-quality paper-cut artists like Nikki McClure, each page of “S is for Salmon” is a work of art in its own right. *Family Fun Fair – Seattle; 5/3; 11:00am – 2:00pm; Join us for a FREE celebration of children and families. Learn about dozens of fun, educational activities and programs designed especially for families of young children. The event includes activity booths, roving performers and more.

*Arbor Day-Earth Day Family Festival - Bellevue; 5/3; 11:30am – 1:30pm;  Local environmental stewardship organizations will host free activities and eco-demonstrations. Junior rangers can get an Arbor Day-Earth Day Passport; gain a stamp at every eco-station to earn a prize!  Shuttle parking will be provided at Wilburton Park and Ride (720 114th Ave. S.E., Bellevue, 98009). Only priority parking will be available at Kelsey Creek Park.

*Mother Goose Story Time – Seattle; 5/3; 1:00pm – 2:00pm; Bring your kids ages 6 and younger to meet master storyteller Mother Goose for myths and legends, sing-alongs, scavenger hunts and other activities highlighting birds and animals of Seward Park and legends of the Northwest. Guest appearances by Talking Tree, Sasquatch, Owl, Eagle and Bear.

*Cinco de Mayo Celebration – Seattle; 5/3; 3:00pm – 8:00pm; Traditional Mexican food for sale, children’s activities, arts and crafts from local vendors, performances and more.

*Spilled Ink: Ballard High School Music and Art Night – Seattle; 5/3; For the past seven years, the Ballard Branch of The Seattle Public Library has hosted the Ballard High School Art Show. This year, the branch’s Teen Advisers have transformed it into a show for INK Magazine, Ballard High School’s annual art and literary journal.  Enjoy art, literature and a night of live music including: Golden Years, No Not Really, Yellow Peril, the Ballard Ukelele Club and Ghetto Blaster.

Sunday, May 4th:

*Cast Off! Free Public Sailing – Seattle; 5/4; 10:00am – 4:00pm;  Our Cast Off! program allows visitors the chance to sail in classic boats.

The boats we use include: Admirable, a Bristol Bay Gillnetter; Amie, a Friendship sloop; Colleen Wagner, an Egret Sharpie; our long-boat Discovery, our New Haven Sharpie Betsy D, or a visiting classic.  Before and after your sail take a walk on the docks and discover the boats. Watch the volunteer crews rigging the boats. They’ll be happy to answer any question you might have, and you may even have a chance to help with the rigging!  Rides start throughout the day and last about 45 minutes. Sign-ups begin in person at 10 a.m.; space is limited and rides fill quickly. Arrive early to ensure your first choice, especially on sunny days and holidays.

*Bicycle Sundays – Seattle; 5/4; 10:00am – 6:00pm; The four-mile stretch of Lake Washington Boulevard between Mount Baker Beach and Seward Park is closed to motorized traffic 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. several Sundays through September, including May 4, 11 and 18.

*Kodomo no Hi (Children’s Day) – Seattle; 5/4; 11:00am – 5:00pm; Kids’ activities, crafts, Japanese cultural performances and more.

*Asian-Pacific Islander Heritage Month Celebration – Seattle; 5/4; 11:45am – 5:00pm; Song, dance, music and art celebrate the diverse cultures of the Asian-Pacific Islander communities. Watch youth drill teams, dance performances, a celebrity hum bow eating contest, taiko drums and more.

*Star Wars Meets The Daffodil Festival – Puyallup; 5/4; 5:00pm – 7:00pm; the Daffodil Festival and our favorite princesses will be hosting a Star Wars themed event at the Mel Korum YMCA in Puyallup from 5-7PM.  This is one of your last chances to mingle with the girls, and it’s great news if you forgot to get tickets to their sold out tea event.  It’s also a great chance for boys or girls who are more into light sabers than tiaras. There will be games, costumes, Jedi training, food, and more.  As low as $6 with coupon codes.

*Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival – Woodburn; 5/2 – 5/4; Daily activities include Children’s play area with duck races, slides, swings and more. Cow train $2 person. Weekends (weather permitting) include pony rides ($5), steam tractors, jump tents, rock wall zip line ($3-$7), archery tag ($5) and paint ball ($7). Well- behaved dogs welcome on leashes. *Music with Miss SaraMag at Rain City Coffee – Portland; 5/2; 10:00am – 11:00am; Miss SaraMag loves to sing, dance, play, inspire, and teach. Miss SaraMag sings and plays the piano, as well as incorporating sign language and dance for interactive fun! $5 suggested donation

*Pioneer Family Festival - Oregon City; 5/2 & 5/3; The annual Pioneer Family Festival promises fun for all ages as part of Oregon City’s Family Fun Days! The festival opens at 2pm Friday May 2nd and runs all weekend, closing Sunday May 4th at 7pm. Highlights include the huge carnival and midway, continuous music on the festival Main Stage, great food from local vendors, and vendors offering commercial goods, crafts, and community information. On Saturday May 3rd enjoy the annual Teddy Bear Parade, starting at 10:30 am from 10th and Main St. in downtown Oregon City. Other Saturday events include the Oregon City Skate Board Competition at noon in the Skate Park. Other festival events include a climbing rock wall, lazer tag, go karts and more. On Sunday be sure to check out the BMX Competition at noon. All proceeds fund youth charities through Oregon City Optimist Club.

*Story Time with Olive and Dingo @ Pie Spot – Portland; 5/2; 3:00pm – 4:00pm; Full of comedy, songs, stories, balloons and laughter. Sure to get the jumpers jumping, the dancers dancing, wigglers wiggling and the noise makers cooing. *Free Comic Book Day; 5/3; Free Comic Book Day is a single day – the first Saturday in May each year – when participating comic book shops across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely free to anyone who comes into their stores. Check with your local comic book shop for their participation and rules. Some also have special events Free Comic Book Day.

*Little Red Riding Hood Meet & Greet at Child’s Play – Portland; 5/3; 10:00am – 11:00am;  Meet characters from the NWCT production of Little Red Riding Hood. Attend the event and enter to win a Family Four Pack of tickets to NW Children Theater’s Little Red Riding Hood.  Must enter at event, but do not have to be present to win. This event is in conjunction with NW Children’s Theater.  See this rock & roll inspired update of the classic tale April 26th – May 26th.

*Rain City Rock Out! at Rain City Coffee – Portland; 5/3; 10:00am – 11:00am; Mo Phillips jams his originals, classic family jams, and supa sweet familiar pop tunes to charge up your Saturday!  $5 suggested donation

*Guided Nature Walks at Tryon Creek – Portland; 5/3; 10:00am-11:30am; Free guided nature hikes exploring the forest and stream ecosystems and natural history at Tryon Creek State Natural Area.  Topics will vary from week to week but will be appropriate for all ages.  Parents must accompany kids on all hikes.

*Kids Fishing Festival at Columbia Springs – Vancouver; 5/3; 10:00am – 2:30pm;  Kids are invited to Columbia Springs to enjoy an experience of mentored fishing. Each registered participant is guaranteed to catch a trout to take home. Fishing gear and a fishing mentor provided.  Children between the ages of 5 to 14 years old are eligible to fish. Participants are required to sign up for a specific hour to fish.  There is a $5 per person registration fee which includes lunch, access to festival activities, and free fishing pole and tackle for participating fishers.

*Faire in the Grove – Forest Grove; 5/3 & 5/4; 10:00am – 6:00pm; Renaissance fun with live heavy armored combat, rapier, dance, music, story telling, merchants, juggling, medieval cooking, and textile demos, book binding, leather working, strolling musicians, singers and dancers throughout the day.

* Kids Saturday Morning Skate Session At Oaks Park – Portland ; 5/3; 10:30am – 12:00pm; For $6 children 10 and under can skate (skates included). Parents free with paid child admission.

*May Day is Lei Day – Vancouver; 5/3; 11:00am – 6:00pm; Arts and crafts vendors, lei, lunch, music, hula, lei contest and more.  Cost:  $5

*StoryWalk® – Oregon City; 5/3; 11:30am – 4:00pm;  The Beavercreek Lions Club brings the StoryWalk® concept to downtown Oregon City on May 3rd, 2014, immediately after the Teddy Bear Parade.   A StoryWalk® is a series of pages of a book spread throughout a specified space or area, in sequence, allowing readers to follow the story by walking. It helps build children’s interest in reading while encouraging healthy outdoor activity for both adults and children. The featured book is The Teddy Bear by David McPhail and is geared toward younger readers (5-7 years of age) and their parents/caregivers. Pages will be posted at a child’s eye level in the windows of the downtown area businesses, starting at Clackamas Auto Parts, winding through downtown and past the elevator, ending at Coffee Rush.

*Free Comic Book Day and Mini Con – West Linn; 5/3; 12:00pm – 5:00pm; Join us for a fun-filled day celebrating comics! The library will be giving away free comic books on Saturday, May 3rd from 12-5pm while supplies last. Meet local comic creators and see their work. Attend comic workshops. Also face painting, popcorn, raffle, costume play.

*Founders Day at Champoeg Heritage Area – St. Paul; 5/3; 1:00pm – 4:00pm; History fun at this pioneer town/museum.Costumed reenactors.  Cost:  $5 to park

*Oregon Pacific Railroad Train Rides at Rail Heritage Center – Portland; 5/3; 1:00pm – 5:00pm; The Oregon Pacific Railroad is offering round trip diesel locomotive powered passenger train rides from the Oregon Rail Heritage Center, located near OMSI. Passenger trains will operate on Saturdays and depart the Oregon Rail Heritage Center at 1:30pm, 2:30pm, 3:30pm and 4:30 pm.  Locomotive cab rides are available for an additional fee.  Cost:  $5

*Great Glasses Play Day – Portland; 5/3; 2:00pm – 4:00pm; Great Glasses Play day is a day to celebrate kids who wear glasses and eye patches. Its a great oportunity for kids to see other kids wearing glasses and eye patches. Come for fun, games, giveaways and carnival type activities including glasses pinata, pin the glasses on the kid game, face painting, Eye Patch swap and much more!

*Free Family Fun Day at Marshall Community Center - Vancouver; 5/3; 2:00pm – 8:30pm; The Marshall Community Center will be hosting a free Family Fun Day and Movie night filled with swimming, fitness, sports, music, the movie Frozen and more. 2:30-5:30 local performers. Movie at 6:30 pm, bring a pad to sit on. No chairs, please. Kids must have grown-up. 3 public swims, see web page. Fitness demos. Pottery 2:30-4:30 pm.

*OCT’s Fancy Nancy at A Children’s Place Bookstore – Portland; 5/3; 3:00pm; You can meet Nancy from Oregon Children’s Theatre’s producation of Fancy Nancy in person. Put on your most exquisite ensemble, and get ready for an hour of fancy fun. We’ll read some of your favorite Fancy Nancy stories, and then Nancy will join us to share a song, as well as some secrets to her very special flair. You’ll be able to enter to win tickets to the show, and receive vouchers for free Cupcake Jones cupcakes.

Sunday, May 4th:

*$2 Days at OMSI – Portland; 5/4; 9:30am to 7:00pm; Explore the museum for $2 on the first Sunday of each month.

*Rieke Art Fair & Cinco de Mayo Celebration – Portland; 5/4; 10:00am – 4:00pm; Buy paintings, photography, jewelry, clothing, stationary and more from local, professional artists. Again this year, parents from Cesar Chavez K-8 School in North Portland will join us to prepare food traditional to the Cinco de Mayo (Fifth of May) celebration of Mexican heritage. The fair coincides with Opening Day of the Hillsdale Farmers Market, creating a day of community-building, artistic expression and cultural celebration not to be missed.

*Nature Days in the Park: Vista Brook Park – Beaverton; 5/4; 11:00am – 3:00pm; Travel the Fanno Creek Trail to Vista Brook Park.  This newly restored site features a new playground and paved trails, but most importantly a viewing platform over the pond.  We will explore the pond and wetland for wildlife that exist in this hidden park.  Education staff and volunteers will lead interactive, nature-based activities.  Park rangers will be avialable to answer your questions. A free event, suitable for all ages.

*Ruckus in the Lobby at Artist Rep – Portland; 5/4; 11:00am – 4:00pm; Traveling Lantern Theatre two-person family-friendly play every Sunday morning at 11 am. Includes a Q&A with the cast afterward. Tickets are only $5 for all who attend over 5 years old, and can be purchased at the door or at www.artistsrep.org.

*May Faire at Micha-el School – Milwaukie; 5/4; 2:00pm – 5:00pm; Celebrate spring with our annual May Faire Festival. This is a lively and fun event with music and games. Children and adults dance around the May pole, make crafts and play games such as potato sack races and a hula hoop contest. There will be music and delicious treats for purchase and a visit from The Pocket Lady. Bring your picnic and a blanket and join us on our beautiful 13 acre site complete with duck pond and wooded paths.

*Micah and Me Singalong! at Warehouse Cafe – Portland; 5/5; 10:00am; Micah and Me Singalong! at Warehouse Cafe Enjoy rollicking kid’s songs by a baby (Micah, our manager) and two stay at home dads (Aaron and Ryan).  $5 suggested donation

*Tallulah’s Daddy at Rain City Coffee – Portland; 5/5; 10:00am – 11:00am; Come sing, dance and play with Tallulah’s Daddy as he plays guitar, bass and cajon. They start with musical storytime, then sing songs, and we leave a little bit of extra time for the kids to get their hands on some percussion instruments!  No cover charge, donations appreciated.

*Music Class with Johnny Keener at The Treehouse – Portland; 5/5; 12:00pm; He will craft music for kids that is exciting and fun, as well as artistically satisfying.  He is committed to inviting kids into the musical process providing them with a musical experience they won’t forget!  Best for ages 0-6.  Cost:  $5 per child

*Story Time with Olive and Dingo @ Warehouse Cafe – Portland; 5/6; 10:00am – 11:00am; Fun for all. Not your average story time. Full of comedy, songs, stories, balloons and laughter. Sure to get the jumpers jumping, the dancers dancing, wigglers wiggling and the noise makers cooing.  Balloons twisting and fellowship is at the end of the show.  Cost:  $5 per child for balloons and entertainment

*Preschool Play and Skate at Oaks Park – Portland; 5/6; 10:00am – 11:30am; This special roller skating session is just for your littlest skaters. Children 6 and under enjoy games, songs, blals, a 15 minute group lesson, snack time, and more.  Conventional skate rental included.  Shoes and strollers welcome on the skating floor.  Adults free with paid children’s admission.  Cost:  $6.00

*Chuck Cheesman at Cafe au Play – Portland; 5/6; 10:30am – 11:15am; Chuck Chessman makes music for children and with children, and he thinks it is probably the best job on the planet. Sometimes parents come to him and say, “Mr. Chuck, I can’t sing.” His reply? “Cookie Monster and Bob Dylan have had hit records. You can sing. Everybody can sing!” And that is the message Chuck Cheesman is pouring into this world. We can all make music together, and we (the boring old grown-ups!) owe it to our children to share with them a love for the arts, music, and dancing. Chuck appears every Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Cafe au Play

*Micah and Me Singalong at Rain City Coffee – Portland; 5/6; 3:00pm; Micah and Me Kids Singalong at Rain City Coffee Tuesdays at 3pm. We will be singing the favorites including Dan Zanes’ new one, “Let’s Dance.”

Wednesday, May 7th:

*Red Yarn at Village Ballroom – Portland; 5/7; 10:00am – 10:45am; Audiences will sing, dance, act, and experience the joy of community during Red Yarn’s interactive shows. Stick around for open playtime after the show, also hosted by Woodlawn Swap’n’Play!  $5/family suggested

*African World Music at Rain City Coffee – Portland; 5/7; 10:00am – 11:00am; Kids of all ages and adults are welcome to join this fun, upbeat music hour of drumming, singing and jamming. Bring your children and come and dance and play along with us and try some of our handmade African kids drums while playing along to the African rhythms.

*Tadpole Tales at Columbia Slough Water Quality Facility  – Portland; 5/7; 10:00am – 11:00am; Children aged 3-5 with their parents are invited to a short story and guided nature walk.  This program runs each Wednesday March-May. Event runs rain or shine. Families are welcome to bring a snack.   Cost:  $3 per child, adults-free

*Wondrous Wednesday’s At The World Forestry Center – Washington Park; 5/7; 10:00am – 5:00pm; Reduced admission for The Discovery Museum. Get in for $3 on the first Wed. of each month.

*Honeybee Hikes at Leach Botanical Gardens – Portland; 5/7; 10:00am – 11:00am; Weekly nature-related activities for young children and their adult caregivers. Discover the secrets of the Garden and its critters through stories and outdoor explorations. Dress for the weather and wear good walking shoes for unpaved, uneven walkways that could be muddy. Strollers limit where we can explore, so carriers are ideal for little ones. No pre-registration required. Best for ages 1-6.  Cost:  $2 per child

*Miss SaraMag at Treehouse Boutique – Portland; 5/7; 10:30am; Miss SaraMag loves to sing, dance, play, inspire, and teach. During the show, you will sing and dance along as Miss SaraMag sings, plays the piano, and incorporates percussion and American Sign Language. Feel free to bring your favorite instrument and play along!  Cost:  $5

*Mo Phillips Party Time! at Oregon Public House – Portland; 5/7; 5:00pm – 6:00pm; Join Mo for some excellent family rock out dinner action

Thursday, May 8th: 

*Free Story Time at Art Ala Carte – Portland; 5/8; 9:15am – 9:45am; Guess what? Story time is returning! Our awesome Friend Jane will return every Thursday morning for a free story time and art project. 9:15-9:45 then stay for open studio after for a discounted rate of $3 off!

*Tallulah’s Daddy at Warehouse Cafe – Portland; 5/8; 10:00am – 11:00am; Tallulah’s Daddy plays fun, energetic and interactive acoustic music for kids, and brings lots of percussion goodies for kids of all ages to play with!  Cost:  donation

The four-mile stretch of Lake Washington Boulevard between Mount Baker Beach and Seward Park is closed to motorized traffic 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. several Sundays through September, including May 4, 11 and 18.
