Using a street map of the course, find as many checkpoints as you can and answer a simple question to prove you were there. *Lower Kinnear Park Opening Celebration – Seattle; 4/26; 1:00pm – 3:00pm; Celebrate the opening of the newly renovated park with games, live music, a scavenger hunt and guided walks. Bring non-perishable donations for the Queen Anne Food Bank.
*Eastside Mathfest – Bellevue; 4/26; 1:00pm – 4:00pm; Zeno hosts an afternoon of carnival-style math games for elementary-school kids.
*Teen Art Workshop: Metal Jewelry – Bellevue; 4/26; 3:00pm – 5:00pm; Create edgy and stunning metal work beautiful enough to wear. Teens will learn techniques from amazing local artist and educator Jennifer Bennett, using metal-smithing hand tools to create their own stylish jewelry. Free for teens. R.S.V.P. online.
*20th Annual Procession of the Species Celebration – Olympia, 4/26; 4:30pm; Parade of costumed participants and floats celebrates relationships between people and the natural world. Join in as long as you observe the three rules (see online).
Sunday, April 27th:
*Spy on the Heritage Park Bald Eagles – Kirkland; 4/27; 9:00am – 11:00am; Come to Heritage Park in Kirkland for close-up views of the bald eagles’ nest! One bald eagle parent has been sitting on the nest for a few weeks, and that means there’s an egg (or, more likely, two) that will hatch soon. We’re hoping for babies late this month or early in May. Stop by for a close look at the big nest and the bald eagle parents, using high-powered spotting scopes provided by Eastside Audubon. We’ll be there the last Sunday of every month from 9 to 11 a.m. and all day on July 4. Free and fascinating for all ages.
*Cast Off! Free Public Sailing – Seattle; 4/27; 10:00am – 4:00pm; Our Cast Off! program allows visitors the chance to sail in classic boats. The boats we use include: Admirable, a Bristol Bay Gillnetter; Amie, a Friendship sloop; Colleen Wagner, an Egret Sharpie; our long-boat Discovery, our New Haven Sharpie Betsy D, or a visiting classic. Before and after your sail take a walk on the docks and discover the boats. Watch the volunteer crews rigging the boats. They’ll be happy to answer any question you might have, and you may even have a chance to help with the rigging! Rides start throughout the day and last about 45 minutes. Sign-ups begin in person at 10 a.m.; space is limited and rides fill quickly. Arrive early to ensure your first choice, especially on sunny days and holidays. One person may sign up five other people who are not present, but no phone reservations are accepted. All ages are welcome and we have life jackets for everyone. We sail rain or shine, but wind conditions may keep us at the dock.
*Family Day: Let’s Get Real – Bellevue; 4/27; 12:00pm – 4:00pm; Explore how real life inspires art at BAM. Enjoy art activities, demonstrations, and performances featuring our newest exhibitions and your imagination. From woodturning to superhero costumes, from life drawings to a community paper-chain that connects all three museum floors, this will be a family day to remember!
*World Pinhole Day Camera Obscura Event – Seattle; 4/27; 1:00pm – 4:00pm; Local arts nonprofit Seattle ReCreative and visual artist Ethan Jackson will be teaming up to transform Fremont’s Ross Park shelter house into a camera obscura-based art installation. ReCreative volunteers will also be leading an all-ages DIY camera obscura-building workshop. Come learn fundamental lessons about photography and the physics of light. This event is FREE, open to the public and fun for all ages! Participants are encouraged to bring a cardboard box and creative material donations.
*Synchronized Swimming Free Show and Try – Kirkland; 4/27; 5:30pm – 7:30pm; This fundraising event is a free synchronized swimming show carried out by Seattle Synchro swimmers. There will also be raffles, silent auctions, and a free try-synchro session at the end of the show. This try-synchro session will show your daughter the basic skills of synchro.

*”Theodore Boone & the Thrill of Rights” Traveling Bus Tour – Seattle; 4/30; 7:00pm; Theodore Boone & the Thrill of Rights traveling bus tour is an authorless theatrical production based on John Grisham’s #1 New York Times Theodore Boone series. The interactive show is aimed at children ages 8 and older and features four actors from the acclaimed children’s theater group, The Story Pirates. During the show, audiences will learn basic concepts of the American justice system while being introduced to the world and characters of Theodore Boone, Kid Lawyer. Performances will include sound effects, interactive skits and games, and the audience will act as a jury. Each show will be followed by a “Theodore Boone & the Thrill of Rights” official bus tour poster signing. Books will be available for sale.

*Chuck Cheesman at Cafe au Play – Portland; 4/29; 10:30am – 11:15am; Chuck Chessman makes music for children and with children, and he thinks it is probably the best job on the planet. Sometimes parents come to him and say, “Mr. Chuck, I can’t sing.” His reply? “Cookie Monster and Bob Dylan have had hit records. You can sing. Everybody can sing!” And that is the message Chuck Cheesman is pouring into this world. We can all make music together, and we (the boring old grown-ups!) owe it to our children to share with them a love for the arts, music, and dancing. *Red Yarn at Village Ballroom – Portland; 4/30; 10:00am – 10:45am; Audiences will sing, dance, act, and experience the joy of community during Red Yarn’s interactive shows. Stick around for open playtime after the show, also hosted by Woodlawn Swap’n’Play! $5/family suggested
*African World Music at Rain City Coffee – Portland; 4/30; 10:00am – 11:00am; Kids of all ages and adults are welcome to join this fun, upbeat music hour of drumming, singing and jamming. Bring your children and come and dance and play along with us and try some of our handmade African kids drums while playing along to the African rhythms.
*Tadpole Tales at Columbia Children’s Arboretum – Portland; 4/30; 10:00am – 11:00am; Children aged 3-5 with their parents are invited to a short story and guided nature walk. This program runs each Wednesday March-May. Event runs rain or shine. Families are welcome to bring a snack. Cost: $3 per child, adults-free
*Honeybee Hikes at Leach Botanical Gardens – Portland; 4/23 10:00am – 11:00am; Weekly nature-related activities for young children and their adult caregivers. Discover the secrets of the Garden and its critters through stories and outdoor explorations. Strollers limit where we can explore, so carriers are ideal for little ones. No pre-registration required. Best for ages 1-6. Cost: $2 per child
*Miss SaraMag at Treehouse Boutique – Portland; 4/30; 10:30am; Miss SaraMag loves to sing, dance, play, inspire, and teach. During the show, you will sing and dance along as Miss SaraMag sings, plays the piano, and incorporates percussion and American Sign Language. Feel free to bring your favorite instrument and play along! Cost: $5
*Story Time with Olive and Dingo @ Pieper Cafe – Portland; 4/30; 3:00pm – 4:00pm; Fun for all. Balloons twisting and fellowship is at the end of the show. Cost: $5 per child for balloons and entertainment
*Mo Phillips Party Time! at Oregon Public House – Portland; 4/30; 5:00pm – 6:00pm; Join Mo for some excellent family rock out dinner action
Thursday, May 1st
*Tallulah’s Daddy at Warehouse Cafe – Portland; 5/1; 10:00am – 11:00am; Tallulah’s Daddy plays fun, energetic and interactive acoustic music for kids, and brings lots of percussion goodies for kids of all ages to play with! Cost: donation
*Play Date at The Kennedy School – Portland; 5/1; 4:00pm – 6:00pm; Gregory Attonito (The Bouncing Souls) & Shanti Wintergate are headed to the northwest on the I Scream For Ice Cream Tour. They will be performing solo acoustic music and their family friendly music project, Play Date. They bring interactive, fun and rocking music the whole family can enjoy.
*Latino Art Exhibit and Showcase Performance – Portland; 5/1; 5:00pm – 8:00pm; LAX IdeAL presents a show of artists of Latin heritage representing six nations with music, singing, dance and spoken word. This will help launch a month long art exhibit of painting, photography, sculpture and more.
