*Halloween Candy Buy-Back for Operation Gratitude – Seattle; 11/1; 3:00pm – 6:00pm; The orthodontic office of Keith B. Wong, DDS, MS are excited to partner with Tully’s and the Capitol Hill community to give thanks to our brave men and women in uniform. On the Friday after Halloween, trick-or-treaters can bring their extra candy to the Tully’s on the corner of 19th Avenue East and East Aloha Street and Dr. Wong and staff will buy it back for $1 per pound. The sweets will then be sent to Operation Gratitude in Van Nuys, California to be included in personalized holiday packages for our service people overseas. In addition, individuals who give up their excess candy will receive “goody bags” containing gifts chosen to bring smiles to their faces (and to their dentists’ faces!).

*Dia de los Muertos Festival – Seattle; 11/1; 5:30pm – 9:00pm; Join us at the Phinney Center Community Plaza for our procession at 5:30 p.m., followed by a festival at 6:30 p.m. in the Blue Building. This FREE event will include a sand painting by Amaranta Ibarra-Sandys, a traditional altar, Ce Atl Tonalli Aztec Dancers, Spanish music for children by Marco Cortes, a raffle to benefit PCPE, sugar skulls and Mexican hot chocolate.

*Birding Basics: 101 – Seattle; 11/2; 8:00am – 9:30am; Welcome fall by discovering the birds we see in the city. Birding 101 begins with short lessons in field identification, common species, binocular and scope selection. *Green Seattle Day – Seattle; 11/2; 10:00am – 2:00pm; Join hundreds of volunteers in 17 parks throughout Seattle to help remove invasive plants, and plant native trees and shrubs. Without a coordinated effort, Seattle is at risk of losing 70% of its forests in just 20 years. Dress for the weather and for working outside. *Lewis Creek Hikes – Bellevue; 11/2; 10:30am – 11:30am; Join a ranger and look for signs of local wildlife as you explore the natural history of Lewis Creek Park. All ages welcome. Dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes. No registration required.
*Try Hockey For Free - Everett; 11/2; 10:45am – 11:45am; In conjunction with USA Hockey, Comcast Community Ice Rink will join more than 500 local programs across the country to encourage kids, ages 4 to 9 to come try youth hockey as part of the NHL’s Come Play Hockey Month. Pre-register online at tryhockeyforfree.com or registration opens at 9 am. Skaters should bring a helmet (bicycle helmets okay) and mitts or gloves.
*Salmon SEEson in Issaquah – Issaquah; 11/2 – 11/10; 11:00am & 1:00pm; See salmon return to Issaquah Creek, where you can view spawning from the bridge or through viewing windows. Though simply produced, these delightful and engaging productions will soon have everyone fully absorbed in the interaction of live theatre. There’s always a slight twist to the traditional story that keeps these productions fresh. This month we have a tale of the importance of sharing and the most important things to share with The Golden Goose. Help bring this tale to life on our stage. *Ian Doescher Shakespeare’s Star Wars at Green Bean Books – Portland; 11/2; 1:00pm – 2:00pm; Local author reads from his laugh out loud retelling of Star Wars using the Bard’s signature storytelling style. Fun for Star Wars fans of all ages. May the verse be with you.
*Paint and Take a Book Bag at Rockwood Library – Portland; 11/2; 1:30pm – 3:00pm; This is a wonderful opportunity for children to be able to paint their very own book bag. During this class, artists will work with the children to design and decorate a tote bag. While the paint is drying, the children will work with oil pastels. The artists will show them various techniques so they are able to expand their creative use of the materials. Upon completion of the class, the children will be allowed to take their art and supplies home in their one-of-a-kind book bag.

*Storytime with Olive Rootbeer and Dingo at Laurelhurst Cafe – Portland; 11/4; 10:00am – 11:00am; Join Olive and Dingo for stories, balloons and songs at Laurelhurst Cafe, a quaint restaurant serving organic local high quality meals. (Gluten free and kids menu options too.). $5 suggested donation.
*Tallulah’s Daddy at Rain City Coffee – Portland; 11/4; 10:00am – 11:00am; Come sing, dance and play with Tallulah’s Daddy as he plays guitar, bass and cajon. Tallulah’s Daddy plays fun, energetic acoustic music for your little ones, and you can grab some coffee, tea or a snack. We start with musical storytime, then sing songs, and we leave a little bit of extra time for the kids to get their hands on some percussion instruments! No cover charge, donations appreciated.

*Portland’5 Noontime Showcase: The Chinook Winds – Portland; 11/4; 12:00pm – 1:00pm; The Chinook Winds performs jewel-like transcriptions of classical works, both perennial favorites (selections from Bizet’s “Carmen”), and more obscure (Schumann’s “Scenes from Childhood”). These Northwest-trained artists will delight you with their enthusiastic and finely crafted interpretations of their eclectic repertory. The trio performs on flute, clarinet and bassoon. Suitable for age 6 and older. Tickets are not required. This show is part of Portland’5 Noontime Showcase, a series of free, monthly, noontime, public performances.
