So technically this place is called “The Super Submarine Sandwich Shop,” but I very seldom hear it called that. We’ve heard about the Chinese Sub Shop since we moved to Memphis and somehow only recently made it there. Possibly because I had some fear of being served sweet and sour chicken on a loaf of sourdough or chicken chow mein on whole wheat. It just sounds weird. But truth be told, this place is just a regular sandwich shop which happens to sell Chinese food as well. But they don’t combine the two. So no Chinese food filled sub sammies.

The sign itself could be another reason we hadn’t ventured in here. Something about that lady on the sign sort of scares me…

However! They claim to have the BEST fresh sandwiches and we just can’t help but put any restaurant to the test who claims to have “the best”!

Street art on the wall outside the sub shop (woohoo Ron Paul!). It looks sort of seedy from the outside, but that’s not terribly unusual in Memphis. We’ve found some of our favorite places to eat are little hole-in-the-wall spots that look sketch from the outside.

Speaking of it being a little bit sketch… haha! It actually wasn’t terribly hot the day that we were there and they had fans going so we stayed and enjoyed our food there along with a fairly packed restaurant. I felt badly for the staff working, though. I can’t imagine how hot it was in the kitchen!

The menu. As you can see, they have a Chinese menu and then a sub sandwich menu. Two separate things, haha!

You get a bag of chips with your sub sandwich so Christopher and I grabbed these two bags. Interestingly enough, they tasted almost exactly the same. The pickle ones had just a little more of a dill flavor, but otherwise they were super similar!

Christopher got the “super sub” which was filled with several different sandwich meats. It was really good! Oh! And we ordered both our subs on “soft bread.” I’m not sure what the “hard bread” is like, but everyone we knew who had been here had recommended that we get the “soft bread” so we did!

My steak with pepper and onion sub (like a Philly cheesesteak). Oh my gracious this was delicious! I’m not really a sandwich girl, but I like a good sub and this was a FANTASTIC sub! They aren’t skimpy with their fillings and the flavors are delightful! I think I would have a hard time ordering anything else here after having this. It’s just that good!

The Chinese Sub Shop or Super Submarine Sandwich Shop, whatever you want to call it, gets two thumbs up from both Christopher and I! We certainly plan to return!
