2016 saw some marvellous performances at our local theatres and we’re sure this will continue well into 2017. We’re giving you a run down of the exciting shows that are coming up at theatres across the (reasonably) local area this January.

One of our New Year’s resolution suggestions for everyone was to get out and go and see more of the wonderful, creative and powerful performances put on across our local theatres. There are so many diverse and professional productions that it would be a shame to not see at least one – take a look what shows are coming up this January and see if any take your fancy.

Kingston’s Rose Theatre

Jungle Book

Adapted for the stage by Ciaran McConville and brought to life by the Rose Youth Theatre, this iconic family tale is an exciting, heartwarming tale of courage, growing up and family that is bound to keep everyone (including the kids!) engaged throughout.

Pins and Needles are proud to be bringing another of Raymond Briggs’ wonderful storybooks to life on stage at the Rose Theatre. After the large success of Father Christmas, the Rose is bringing you another wonderfully wintry tale with a humorous twist. The perfect production for little people, The Bear features puppetry, music and great storytelling.

A Judgement in Stone

A dark and dramatic thriller production from Bill Kenwright, A Judgement in Stone, written by renowned thriller novelist Ruth Rendell, is a twisted tale of murder, deceit, despair and grizzly secrets. Building on the success of long-running The Agatha Christie Company, A Judgement in Stone features astounding dramatic performances from TV stars including Andrew Lancel and Sophie Ward.

Winter Solstice

Written by Schimmelpfennig, Germany’s most performed playwright, this hilariously sharp comedy-drama focuses on married couple Albert and Bettina during the Christmas period. They are slightly less than enthralled when Bettina’s seemingly rowdy mother comes to stay and after meeting a man on the train, decides to bring him back to join the fun! (Take a look at the cast photo below – preparing for what is sure to be a brilliant show.)

Wimbledon’s New Wimbledon Theatre

How to Hide a Lion

Recommended for ages 3 to 6, How to Hide a Lion centralises on a young girl attempting to hide a shunned lion in numerous creative spaces! It’s a tricky one, as lions are pretty tough to hide…Helen Stephen’s magical book is brought to life in this wonderful production, with a host of puppetry, light humour and fun songs. Babe, the Sheep-Pig

Based on the iconic book by Dick King-Smith, this play by David Wood is a heart-melting story focusing on Babe the pig and his attempt at making in a dog’s world. Join the POLKA theatre for this enchanting play, hosting laughs, puppetry and original music.

Guildford’s Yvonne Arnaud Theatre

Author Alan Ayckbourn directs this new revival of the classic comedy. This hilarious tale, which focuses on composer Jerome’s cunning plan to complete his life’s masterwork, stars Bill Champion and Andy Cryer among several other supreme talents.
