Back in June of 2012, the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) was held in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro. Also known as Rio+20, it was an international conference on sustainable development. Naturally, this also included some very creative local exhibitions that touch on the subject.
Installed on Rio’s Botafogo Beach, three enormous illuminated fish emerge from the sand. Illuminated externally, they are an unavoidable beacon in the black of night. Constructed from discarded plastic bottles, they are a painful reminder of plastics that end up in the oceans as well as the fish we eat.
The enormity of the fish reminds us of how big a problem ocean pollution is, yet finds a creative and dazzling way of getting this message across. Now that we sit in the wake of the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics, let us be reminded yet again that we have to create a more sustainable future not just for ourselves, but for all species.
