Kapsch CarrierCom and Kapsch TrafficCom, experts in the area of mobility solutions for rail, road and public transport, have opened a branch office in London as their official representation in the UK. The subsidiary companies of one of Austria’s most successful technology corporation, Kapsch Group, have been active in the UK market for many years and have successfully implemented several railway, public transport and traffic management projects.

At the opening celebrations, Dr. Kari Kapsch, COO of Kapsch Group, presented Kapsch‘s plans for the UK in the presence of the Austrian ambassador Martin Eichtinger and representatives from the industry and the media. “Great Britain is an important market for Kapsch – for railway communications as well as for our solutions in the area of public transport and intelligent mobility solutions for road traffic management. With a base in London, we can strengthen our local position and are much closer to our customers”, stated Dr. Kari Kapsch. “At Kapsch we create integrated mobility solutions for road, rail and public transport and are constantly pushing the boundaries of mobility to help create smart cities and intelligent transportation systems. The UK is already on its way to connect different means of transportation, and we believe that our solutions can contribute to the future of mobility, which shall be seamless, secure, fast and efficient transportation.”

Kapsch lighthouse projects in the UK

Since beginning activity in the UK, both companies have been awarded several contracts; Kapsch CarrierCom is maintaining the entire GSM-R network on behalf of British railway infrastructure operator Network Rail within a multi-year agreement, and Kapsch supports Network Rail’s control center team to ensure the highest levels of network availability, enabling higher frequency of train services.

Furthermore, Kapsch CarrierCom is currently implementing a digital radio network based on the TETRA standard for Nexus, the Newcastle based strategic public transport body in North East England. The company owns and manages the Tyne and Wear Metro – Britain’s most highly frequented public transport system outside of London. About 37 million passengers use the Metro system annually and a new digital radio system will be installed on a fleet of 90 trains, replacing the existing analog system. The new network will contribute to safe and smooth operation and will establish the basis for Nexus to develop and expand its service offerings. With the new branch office in London, Kapsch is looking to expand its UK offering to include ticketing and ITCS solutions for public transport.

The latest project for Kapsch TrafficCom is the implementation of Europe’s most advanced integrated traffic management system. The company is going to supply the Advanced Traffic Management System DYNAC® as part of a collaborative program between Highways England and Rijkswaterstaat, the English and Dutch national road authorities. The program aims to modernize the software in the traffic management centers. Both authorities wish to improve customer services by implementing a future-proof traffic management system which contributes to increased efficiency and safety, facilitating a quicker response to real-time events.
