Golden Globe winners “La La Land” and “Moonlight” have been nominated as the best motion pictures of 2016 by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), actors Sophie Turner and Dominic Cooper announced on Tuesday morning in London.

The two films will compete with “Manchester by the Sea,” “I, Daniel Blake” and “Arrival” in the Best Film category at the EE British Academy Film Awards, which will take place at the Royal Albert Hall in London on Sunday, February 12.

In the directing category, the nominees are Denis Villeneuve for “Arrival,” Ken Loach for “I, Daniel Blake,” Damien Chazelle for “La La Land,” Kenneth Lonergan for “Manchester by the Sea” and the most surprising entry, Tom Ford for “Nocturnal Animals.”

Ford’s film, in fact, received nine nominations, which tied it with “Arrival” for second place behind “La La Land,” which led the field with 11.

“Manchester by the Sea” received six nominations, while “Hacksaw Ridge,” “Lion,” “I, Daniel Blake” and “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” received five. “Moonlight” and “Florence Foster Jenkins” each received four.

The acting categories were filled with a number of Oscar favorites: Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams from “Manchester by the Sea,” Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone from “La La Land,” Andrew Garfield from “Hacksaw Ridge,” Amy Adams from “Arrival,” Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant from “Florence Foster Jenkins,” Natalie Portman from “Jackie,” Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman from “Lion,” Mahershala Ali and Naomie Harris from “Moonlight,” Viola Davis from “Fences” and Jeff Bridges from “Hell or High Water.”

But the BAFTA voters also chose a few surprises, including Jake Gyllenhaal and Golden Globe winner Aaron Taylor-Johnson from “Nocturnal Animals,” SAG nominee Emily Blunt from “The Girl in the Train” and Hayley Squires from “I, Daniel Blake.”

The most surprising omission from the acting roster was probably Denzel Washington, whose performance in “Fences” was overlooked in favor of Gyllenhaal and “Captain Fantastic” star Viggo Mortensen. Actor-director Washington’s August Wilson adaptation received a supporting-actress nomination for Davis, but nothing else.

Since the Oscars expanded the number of Best Picture nominees in 2009, 32 of the 35 BAFTA Best Film nominees have gone on to receive Oscar nominations, and five of the seven winners have also won the Oscar for Best Picture. (The two exceptions came the last two years, when “Boyhood” and “The Revenant” won at BAFTA while “Birdman” and “Spotlight” won at the Oscars.)

Last year, of the 17 categories that overlap between BAFTA and the Academy, the same person or film won in 14. More than 70 percent of the BAFTA nominees in those categories went on to receive Oscar nominations.
