On an unseasonably warm day earlier this fall, a festive group of women gathered at North Brooklyn Farms to celebrate the launch of Zimmermann’s exclusive new capsule collection for Barneys New York. As they caught each other up on careers and giggled over pastries and champagne, the spirited bunch effortlessly embodied what the brand is known for: sophistication, femininity, and optimism—and, like the brand, they all happened to be from Australia.

The intimate group included the brand’s sister duo Nicky and Simone Zimmermann, along with fashion industry friends Montana Cox, Michelle Jank, Jessica Hart, Jessie Bush, Veronika Heilbrunner, and Margarat Zhang—who was there to photograph the capsule collection as worn by the garden party guests. “We may all be Aussies, but being here in New York launching this collection into Barneys and celebrating with these women makes perfect sense,” explains Simone. “Nicky and I have been coming here regularly for 20 years, and it’s a home away from home. Many of these well-traveled, inspiring women would say the same.”

The capsule collection was designed specifically for Barneys with an emphasis on fun and feminine party pieces that are as at home at seasonal soirees as they are on a winter getaway. Nicky, who heads up creative for the brand while Simone focuses on business, explains that the inspiration for the collection started from the feeling of iconic holiday destinations, though not one in particular. “It’s about the nostalgic feeling of classic ‘50s summer clothes, so the prints are a bit lounge-y,” she explains. “We wanted it to feel fresh and feminine with a hint of retro. It’s very much a part of our girl’s larger story, in that it’s optimistic and feminine, but there’s a little bit of sexiness there too. Our girl is always a little bit naughty—she’s always fun and never too buttoned up!”

The Sydney-born brand celebrated for its bold swimwear has evolved into a global powerhouse, while always staying true to their signature aesthetic. “We’ve grown up along with our customer. It’s a more global world now, and our girl is in New York, she’s in Greece, but she’s always the same girl.” And while Nicky and Simone often refer to their “girl,” they’re quick to admit that, like the beach inspiration of the collection, the girl is an idea more than a specific person. “Always these women here today are our girl,” says Nicky. “Margaret Zhang, for example, she represents everything that Zimmermann loves. She’s a fashion girl but she works really, really hard and is so clever and talented. We’re proud that she’s a Zimmermann girl.”
