Sole Series is back for a second installment and beginning today, special collaborative launches will roll out between your favorite brands and Barneys New York. Spearheaded by our own senior buyer of men’s shoes, Chris Pepe, the focus on the project this time was to elevate iconic styles. Partnering with contemporary brands, famed are taken to the next level in a way that hasn’t been seen before.
“With our Sole Series launches this year, we were really involved in the design process. The styles feel more elevated and aligned with how we’d buy shoes for ourselves,” says Chris.
As a follow up on past successful collaborations with Adidas, the team gives a new spin on Stan Smith and Superstar favorites this season. The two exclusive pairs, which are available in both men’s and women’s sizes, are a modern take on the iconic design. The team was inspired to create a pared down version, striping away stitching and embellishments to reveal a smooth, clean sneaker in the simplest form. Glossy leather is used throughout and is laser-cut away to etch recognizable Stan Smith and Superstar detailing along with the Barneys New York logo. As each pair is reconstructed, special design nuances are revealed including a leather Superstar shell toe, which is normally made from rubber.
“Andrew, our Associate Buyer, also had the idea to laser-cut the three stripes on the side which differentiates our exclusive Superstar style from all others,” explains Chris, “Because there are almost no visible stitch lines on the shoes, the classic is pushed to another level. Our design is a way to strip down an iconic style to it’s most minimal aesthetic.”
The exclusive, laser-cut sneakers showcase the original, simplistic Stan Smith and Superstar shapes in a modern way. As the fashion world has embraced functional footwear and the athleisure trend, customers are drawn to the easy-to-wear designs of the Stan Smith and Superstar. “These sneakers are so timeless. Anybody can wear them and they can be paired with almost anything,” notes Chris. It’s no wonder the classic styles have become increasingly popular in recent years as the no-nonsense shoe of choice. The stylish Barneys collaboration pushes Stan Smith and Superstar styles to a new stark minimalism.
Evolving from the last installment, the specially designed, limited-edition Sole Series collaborations are a revamp of truly iconic footwear. The on-going releases will continue monthly so keep your eye out for more exclusive styles from Vans, Diadora, Timberland, Filling Pieces, and Common Projects, coming soon.
