You’ve undoubtedly heard it before, but it’s worth repeating — we are now living in the golden age of vegan cheese.
Wait, you haven’t heard that? Oh, well, it’s true. And I’m here with a second cheese review in a month to prove it.
It wasn’t long ago that, if you went the store-bought-vegan-cheese route, your options often included cheeses that were lacking in one quality or another. Some weren’t versatile, a few had a grainy texture, and let’s just say that it took some time to fine tune the stretch- and melt-ability factor. Don’t get me wrong, I liked a number of these cheeses just fine…but would I have serve them to my dad? No.
These days, however, it’s not a concern. Most any natural foods store (or natural foods section) boasts a bevy high-quality, gourmet vegan cheeses. Though you aren’t going to confuse them for the dairy-based variety, they can stand for themselves and you are sure to find a few that can please any palate. Among them, Heidi Ho cheeses.
Heidi Ho is a relatively new line of cheeses. If you watch the show Shark Tank, you may have seen them! Heidi Ho is all about producing cheeses that are healthier for you and the plant. They’re a “a mission-driven company which aims to be the cheese that creates the change” (I love their vision and value statements — check them out here). I was so excited when a package of their creamy chia cheeze, Ne Chévre Pure and Ne Chévre Black Lava showed up on my doorstep so I could try them out before they hit stores in my area!
The cashew-based cheeses feature organic ingredients and live cultures and are free of additives and fillers. They are spreadable and dip-able, and the creamy chia cheeze is meltable and pourable, too. As in pour it over chips, broccoli or a baked potato. One of the first things I did was melt it over a few tortilla chips for a nostalgic treat of nachos (the only thing missing was the flimsy plastic holder!).
