The 2014 class of athletes are set to enter the Woodstock Sports Wall of Fame.
The annual event will see seven individuals and one team be honoured for their accomplishments for their local, national and international achievements Oct. 25 at Goff Hall at 2 p.m.
The ceremony is free to the public and run by the Woodstock Recreation Advisory Committee.
HISTORIC CATEGORY – DOUG SHELTON
Jake Muzzin may be the first person from Woodstock to win the Stanley Cup, but Shelton was the first to lace up a pair of skates in the NHL.
Shelton played five games with the Chicago Blackhawks in 1967, posting an assist, before spending time in various minor leagues finally settling in Dallas.
“I didn’t feel like I didn’t belong. It was fun. We weren’t making anything and most guys had a summer job,” Shelton said in an August 2013 interview with the Sentinel-Review of playing in the NHL. “I spent a little too much time standing and watching in practice. I was impressed, but I didn’t feel out of place. It was a real thrill.”
TEAM CATEGORY – 1974-75 COLLEGE AVENUE SR. BOYS’ BASKETBALL TEAM
Forty years ago, the College Avenue senior boys’ basketball was almost unbeatable.
They went 30-7 throughout the season in what was a much longer season that ultimately culminated in a WOSSAA ‘AA’ championship to have them advance to provincials.
At OFSAA, they came home as silver medalists after losing 65-45 to Chatham McGregor.
INDIVIDUAL FEMALE ATHLETE – KARLEIGH PARKER
Over the last seven years, Parker has racked up more than her fare share of medals.
At the high school, club and collegiate level, Parker has multiple gold, silver and bronze as well as holding records wherever she’s competed.
Parker, who attends Western Kentucky University, gained fame in javelin and pole vault but also participated in multiple track and field events.
Among her accolades include WOSSAA and OFSAA gold medals, Canadian Youth Nationals under-17 gold and silver, being named to Legion National Team Ontario Track and Field team in 2008 and was part of the Canadian Junior National team.
She holds records in javelin and pole vault in six high school meets, under-17 Ontario, and Western Kentucky school records.
INDIVIDUAL MALE ATHLETE – STEVE KOCSIS
The former St. Mary’s student more than hold his own on the track as a high school athlete.
Kocsis, who competed in the mid- to late-1990s, won OFSAA gold in the junior boys’ 3000m in 1998 and the senior boys’ 3000m in 1999 before attending University of Tennessee-Chattanooga. He also won OFSAA gold in cross country as a midget in 1995.
He also represented Ontario at international competition against the U.S. Junior National Team and was a four-time city champion in the 1,500m and 3,000m and took part in the Canadian Junior Track and Field Championships. He qualified for the NCAA nationals in 2003 and 2004 for cross country and 2004 for indoor track and field.
BUILDER OF SPORT – PAT SLOAN
Anyone who’s walked the halls at St. Mary’s High School or stepped foot in Southwood Arena has an idea who Sloan is.
The longtime teacher and coach at St. Mary’s has also been a part of the Woodstock Minor Hockey Association in some capacity since 1974. He continues to coach with the WMHA and has done so through nearly every level, helping to teach countless thousands of players the game of hockey.
Sloan has coached St. Mary’s varsity boys’ hockey team for more than 20 years and has spent the last 21 years organizing the annual Warriors Classic Jr. Hockey Tournament, which continues to be one of the largest high school tournaments in southern Ontario.
LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT – ROSS MOYER
Moyer has a lifelong involvement with the Woodstock Figure Skating Club. He started in 1952 when his daughter joined and held a number of positions on the club’s executive, including President from 1962-64.
He was also a judge for the Canadian Figure Skating Association and in 1972 he received a lifetime membership to the club, becoming only the sixth person to do so.
HONOURABLE ACHIEVEMENT – JAKE MUZZIN AND BRAD KOVACHIK
For anyone that’s watched hockey in the last year, the names Muzzin and Kovachik keep popping up. Muzzin became the first Woodstonian to win the Stanley Cup that culminated in a mid-summer celebration that saw most of Woodstock come out. While Muzzin may have his named engraved on the Cup, Kovachik helped officiate at the 2014 Winter Olympics and was a linesman in the 2014 Stanley Cup.
Although neither of them will be able to attend the event, the City of Woodstock’s communications and special events manager, said they’ll be honoured in person at a different date once their respective seasons end in the spring.
