ARLINGTON, Texas – Gerald Richey has retired after serving as an assistant track and field coach at UT Arlington for 19 years, head coach John Sauerhage has announced. Richey worked primarily with the men’s and women’s pole vaulters at UTA.
Richey came to UT Arlington after spending 27 years (1968-95) at Arlington High School. There, he helped serve as a mentor for Sauerhage during his running career.
“Coach Richey has basically been my track and field father,” Sauerhage said. “We’ve been together my entire adult life as both an athlete and as a coach. It’s been wonderful having him involved at UTA and he’s still going to come around and see us quite a bit.”
As a result, assistant coach Wade Hayes, a former UTA pole vaulter under Richey, will take over the pole vault coaching duties on a full-time basis after assisting for the past several seasons.
At UTA, Richey worked with numerous all-conference performers, including recent graduates Jeff Rodriguez, the current school-record holder, as well as All-American multi-event specialist Romain Martin.
“Coach Richey loves this program and has given so much to it over the past two decades,” Sauerhage said. “In my early years as a head coach he provided me with great counsel and I will still call on him for guidance from time to time. We appreciate everything he has done, and are very happy he is going to be able to spend more time with his family.”
During Richey’s time in the prep ranks, he coached two state champion cross country teams, two state runner-up cross country teams, a regional championship cross country team, 18 district champion cross country teams, seven district champion track teams and numerous individual state meet qualifiers and champions.
