Last year, the women on the distance medley relay team went to the NCAA Indoor National Championship with some experience. This year, they are returning with even more confidence and the all important been-there-and-succeed experience.
The 2014 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships is March 14-15 at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C. The meet is hosted by Winston-Salem State.
The team of Marina Vorderbruegge (1,200 meters), Chavariana Ryan (400-meters), Aman Hundal (800-meters) andCourtney Anderson (1600-meters) are competing at the championship meet for the second straight season. Last year, the quartet finished second by besting their qualifying time by 12 seconds.
This time around, they will enter with the season’s fourth fastest time — a 11:49.16 set on Feb. 14 at the UW Husky Classic. They came in second last year in 11:31.76. This year’s top time belongs to Adams State in 11:45.08. So a championship is within reach and a second straight All-American performance is definitely a possibility.
Additionally, two of the four members on the relay team will also be competing individually in the 3,000-meter run. Anderson recorded the fifth fastest time with a 9:40.25 at the UW Indoor Open, the day after helping set the DMR mark. Vorderbruegge will also run in the 3k with a seed time of 9:50.62, currently 13th best in the country.
All four Warriors on the relay team also had previous outdoor national championship meet experiences with Ryan part of the All-American 4×400 relay team from 2012.
In pole vault, Sian Morgan is looking to become the next All-American in a historically strong event for the Warrior women. Morgan qualified the national championship meet with a season best of 12 feet 6 1/4 inches, accomplished in the final qualifying event of the season at Seattle Pacific on March 1.
Morgan could become the seventh All-American from Cal State Stanislaus in the event of pole vault since 2005. Chaunte Mitchell, two-time outdoor champion, was an All-American in 2005 and 2006, followed by Rosemary Feikert (2008) and Annie Burlingham (2010). Alycia Wagner notched back-to-back All-American performances in 2011-2012.
Morgan was a 2012 CCAA champion in the outdoor version of the pole valut when she captured the title with a then-career best 12-feet-4.
