2013-12-14

As the Weston High boys indoor track team prepares to start the 2013-14 season it is well aware of the work it has ahead of it.

While the Trojans’ goals for the season have not changed, how they go about accomplishing them will take some adjustment on their part. With the loss of a number of athletes since last season they will be relying on others to fill in and get the job done.

“As always, our number one goal is to stay healthy as a team, then improve week to week,” said head coach Matt Medve, now in his 16th season. “The first goal at the end of the season is to defend our SWC championship, then place high at the state meets.”

Practicing since the start of last week, Weston took advantage of some favorable weather to train outside. They right where they should be at this point of the pre-season.

Once again, the Trojans have some good numbers with about 50 on the team. With a fairly even distribution of athletes, they could find talent in each of the four grades.

Some of it is back from last season’s team which won the South-West Conference championship. That team also went on to place sixth out of 27 at the state Class M meet.

Trying to match that success will be a challenge as Weston graduated a number of talented athletes since then. Among them are former captains David Stankiewicz, Noah Krassin and Larry Cass.

An All-SWC honorable mention and All-State second team selection, Stankiewicz competed in the middle distance events and relays. Krassin (All-SWC, All-State second team) ran distance. Cass (All-SWC second team, All-State second team) competed in the shot put.

Weston also graduated sprinter Jon Savicky. Distance runner Will Glaser (All-SWC second team, All-State second team) have also graduated.

To help pick up the slack, Weston will depend on a number of proven scorers, some of whom will  be in a variety of events. These include senior captains Bryan Lonergan, Greg Kaeser and Nick DiBartholomeo.

Lonergan (All-SWC) will be in the sprints and relays. Kaeser is experienced in the hurdles and DiBartholomeo (All-SWC second team) is back for the pole vault.

Classmate Eric Jesperson will do the shot put and Will Crum adds depth to the pole vault. Weston also has an experienced distance runner in James Murphy (All-SWC).

From the junior class is Ian Steube, a long jumper and sprinter. Chris Petty (All-SWC) will also run the sprints, as will Jake Matluck, and Cole Clark is a middle distance runner.

The Trojans will also count on others to score points as the season continues. It officially starts on Saturday with the Reindeer Relays at Wilton High.
