What: explorASIAN 2015 Recognition Gala

Where: Inlet Theatre, Port Moody
The skinny: explorASIAN 2015 is pleased to present an evening of Iranian cuisine, performances, cocktails, dancing, raffle and auction. Featured will be vocalist Soley with the Vashan Ensemble and dancer Lia Fallah. Recognized for their fine community work will be the Tri Cities Iranian Cultural Society, Society of Iranian Canadian Professionals and Persian Cultural and Art Institute.

What: Gabi & Jules a la Mode

The skinny: In a world where nearly everything is par-baked, frozen and shipped for thousands of miles before it meets your lips, Lisa and Patrick Beecroft are bucking the trend to make homemade a reality. Building on the success of their boutique coffee shops, Caffe Divano, Lisa and Patrick are launching Gabi & Jules. Gabi & Jules is a new line of locally made baked goods including artisan pies, jams, granola and scone mixes to enjoy at home. More than simply their children’s names, Gabi & Jules is a labour of love to support their family and the Autism Support Network. The first event is a pie and ice cream tasting evening. The evening includes a flight of Gabi & Jules pie samples paired with Rocky Point Ice Cream, complimentary teas, coffees and wines, music and prizes. What: Whose Got Talent Anyway

The skinny: Imagine a night where improvised comedy collides with a talent show of epic proportions. Imagine a night where two teams of improvisers are pit against each other to see who really has the necessary skills to take home the win. Are you ready for Whose Got Talent Anyway? Second Storey Theatre’s improvisers sure aren’t, because they won’t know the lineup of challenges until they’re thrown into this improvised night of talent…or lack thereof. The best part? You and the rest of the audience will have the power to decide which team of improvisers walks away victorious.

What: VSO Tiny Tots: Let Your Music Shine

Where: Terry Fox Theatre, Port Coquitlam
The skinny: We’re going on a picnic! This playful show introduces children and families to the music of Claude Debussy where the audience will move along to classic “miniatures” of his most famous melodies. Sing-a-long favorites and musical games round out the fun. Children are encouraged to bring their own teddy bears to the concert.

What: Family Fun Day

What: Community Book Drive

The skinny: Start gathering your gently used books! This will be a great way to donate kids or grown-up books to promote literacy in our community. These books will be given to the Share’d Treasures Thrift Store as net proceeds from the sale of the books will go towards supporting Tri-Cities SHARE programs like: The SHARE Food Bank, SHARE Family Resource Centres and Children’s Programs.

What: Polish Culture and Heritage Days

What: BC Uncorked: The Art of Food and Wine

Where: Heritage Woods Secondary, Port Moody
The skinny: This wine-tasting event showcases new and current releases from top BC wineries, and raises funds for The Ride to Conquer Cancer. And, it should come as no surprise, that it’s a hit every time it happens. This time the event features more than 40 wineries and eateries. Prepare to spend a relaxing evening exploring the wines at your own pace. Your ticket price includes free parking, access to the event, samples of all available wines, light snacks and live background music. There is also a silent auction so prepare to place your bids, and enter the draw to win a wine fridge. And if you’re enjoying the wines you’ll want to check out the on-site wine store.

What: Como Lake Fishing Derby
When: Sunday, May 31, 2015 from 7:00am to 12:00pm
Where: Como Lake, Coquitlam
The skinny: A free event for youth under 16 years of age, the Como Lake Fishing Derby has prize giveaways and a pancake breakfast available for a nominal charge. The event is hosted by the Coquitlam Festival Society, the Kinsmen Club of Coquitlam and the Port Coquitlam Rod and Gun Club. Hundreds of prizes are awarded each year for a variety of catches, from the largest and smallest fish to the strangest catch of the day. As the children fish, parents are welcome to enjoy a pancake breakfast cooked by the Coquitlam Kinsmen Club. Remember to bring your own fishing pole and bait.

What: Chess Club and Letter to My Future Self

The skinny: The Young Actors Project is proud to present two new movie projects and an original stage play from Leo Award winning filmmaker Robert Randall. Chess Club is a new web series. Popular girl Frankie Turner, blackmailed by the school principal, is forced to join a group of misfits in the middle school chess club. Will her reputation survive? And what secret is she hiding? Letter to my Future Self is a short film about a teen girl who receives a letter she wrote to herself when she was 8 and dreaming of being a teenager. But now, confronted with her younger self, she’s forced to deal with the fact that nothing turned out the way she wanted. Live stage presentations will round out an entertaining night of premieres.

What: Whitesnake: The Purple Tour

The skinny: Iconic rockers Whitesnake will be hitting the road this spring with their North American tour. Formed in 1977 and steered by English singer-songwriter and former Deep Purple frontman David Coverdale, Whitesnake carries a rightful reputation as one of the world’s leading bands. Coverdale’s blues & soul roots combined with rock & roll have consistently shaped the Snake’s sound. Their ascent to the top was confirmed with 1987’s self-titled mega-platinum album which featured the band’s two #1 singles, “Here I Go Again” and “Is This Love” along with “Still of the Night” and “Give Me All Your Love”. What: Spirit of the Coast
When: Monday, June 1, 2015 from 7:00 to 8:30m
Where: Terry Fox Library, Port Coquitlam
The skinny: Join professional wilderness guide Chris Cooper as he recounts his Spirit of the Coast journey, a 1,200 km canoe trip from the Fraser River to the Alaskan border. The 90 day trek was made with an international team comprised of members from British Columbia, Ontario, Alberta, Scotland, England, the United States and the Kwantlen Nation.
