Bahrain has cut ties, Sudan has expelled Iran´s ambassador and the UAE has downgraded its diplomatic team. Saudi Arabia on Sunday gave Iranian diplomats two days to leave after an attack on its embassy in Tehran. Saudi Arabia and Iran are the key Sunni and Shia powers in the region and back opposing sides in Syria and Yemen. Bahrain, which is ruled by a Sunni Muslim king but has a majority Shia population, on Monday gave Iranian diplomats 48 hours to leave the country. It accused Iran of “increasing, flagrant and dangerous meddling” in the internal affairs of Gulf and Arab states.

Sunlit uplands beckon. Almost $2 trillion of annual stimulus from cheap oil has been accumulating for months, pent up and waiting to be spent. It will soon come flooding through in a burst, catching the world by surprise. But beware: the more beguiling it is over coming months, the more traumatic it will be later as the reflation scare comes alive. Since the rite of New Year predictions is to stick one´s neck out, let me hazard hopefully that this treacherous moment can be deferred until 2017. The positive oil shock will hit just as austerity ends in the US, and big-spending states

DUBAI/RIYADH – Saudi Arabia cut ties with Iran on Sunday, responding to the storming of its embassy in Tehran in an escalating row between the rival Middle East powers over Riyadh´s execution of a Shi´ite Muslim cleric. Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir told a news conference in Riyadh that the envoy of Shi´ite Iran had been asked to quit Saudi Arabia within 48 hours. The kingdom, he said, would not allow the Islamic republic to undermine its security. Iranian protesters stormed the Saudi embassy in Tehran early on Sunday and Shi´ite Iran´s top leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, predicted “divine vengeance” for the execution

BLOODTHIRSTY Islamic State (ISIS) militants have issued a terror threat to the UK in a chilling video which purportedly shows the execution of five alleged British spies. In what has the feel of a desperate propaganda video, a child speaking with a British accent points out where the executions will take place. He says: “We will kill the the kuffar [non believers] over there.” The terror group’s five helpless victims, dressed in orange jump suits and wearing handcuffs, are filmed as they speak to the camera in Arabic. However the video seen by Express.co.uk does not show the actual execution.

After two years of doing little about the mass surveillance revealed by Edward Snowden, the US Congress has sprung into action in less than two days – with investigations into the NSA spying on some the legislature´s members. On Tuesday the Wall Street Journal reported that conversations between members of Congress and senior Israeli politicians had been monitored by the NSA under the orders of the White House. The surveillance of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his advisors occurred during negotiations into a deal with Iran over its nuclear power program. When the executive branch surveillance came to light, a senior

The US State Department urged leaders throughout the region to redouble efforts to lower tensions. Iranian protesters angry over the execution stormed the Saudi embassy in Tehran, setting fire to the building. Sheikh Nimr was one of 47 people executed for terrorism offences. He was a vocal supporter of mass protests in the Saudi-Arabia´s Shia-majority Eastern Province in 2011. In a statement, US state spokesman John Kirby appealed to Saudi Arabia´s government to respect and protect human rights, and to ensure fair and transparent judicial proceedings. Mr Kirby also urged the Saudi government to permit peaceful expression of dissent and, along with other leaders in

Angry Iranian protesters stormed Saudi Arabia´s embassy in Tehran in the early hours of Sunday, smashing furniture and starting fires before being removed by the police, Reuters reports. The protesters gathered outside the embassy to protest against Saudi Arabia´s execution of Nimr al-Nimr, a prominent cleric from the kingdom´s Shiite minority, on terrorism charges that Iran said were unjustified. They then broke into the building and lit fires inside before being cleared by police, the ISNA news agency reported. Images shared on social media appeared to show protesters smashing furniture inside the embassy, according to Reuters.

As residents prepared to watch the New Year’s Eve fireworks from their garden, they told of how the fire engulfed the hotel in minutes, prompting fire safety officials to order an evacuation of nearby buildings. “My wife was bathing our baby when I heard loud sounds. WASHINGTON — Busy as they were, Hillary Clinton’s aides found time to constantly compliment their boss’ appearance, according to the latest batch of e-mails released by the State Department. When a photo of Clinton on her Blackberry started lighting up the Internet in April 2012, an aide forwarded it to Clinton chief of staff Cheryl Mills under the subject line, “Photo gone viral!” Mills passed it along to Clinton, who wanted to know why it was so popular. “You look cute,” responded Mills. Undersecretary Judith McHale wrote her boss in May 2012 that she had seen an article mentioning how

Texas Gov Greg Abbott criticized President Barack Obama´s plan to move ahead with possible executive actions on guns in a tweet in which he told the Commander-in-Chief to ´come & take´ the state´s guns. Obama said in his weekly radio address that he is looking for ways to keep guns out of the hands of ´a dangerous few´ without depending on Congress to pass a law on the fraught subject of gun control. He plans to meet his attorney general, Loretta Lynch, on Monday to see what executive actions might be possible. Steps to strengthen background checks could come this week.

You must concede this about Donald Trump: He does keep his enemies and opponents rocking back on their heels. He does it, as the Wall street Journal’s sage James Taranto, observes, by following the very Saul Alinsky tactics that so impressed Hillary as a Wellesley undergrad. This week he made clear that if Hillary was going to charge him with being part of the “war on women” (the successor, I take it, to her historic “vast right wing conspiracy”), he was going to attack her as an enabler and defender of a serial sexual predator — her husband. Now, he is accusing

Sen. Jim Inhofe, R-Okla., issued a near-endorsement of his Senate colleague Marco Rubio for president Friday. Inhofe told the Tulsa World that he is not yet prepared to formally endorse, but that Rubio is “one that I really do like.” “The reason I say that is he´s so knowledgeable. I´d love to see him in a debate with Hillary just for my own personal entertainment,” Inhofe said. Inhofe´s embrace of Rubio, a Florida Republican, is a pointed rebuke of Sen. The question all but answers itself, I should think. Here’s why it’s being asked: On September 14, 2012, at a memorial service for the victims of the Benghazi attacks, Hillary Clinton spoke with members of the victims’ families. At least three of these people say that Clinton talked about the alleged role in the attack of a video produced by Nakoula Basseley Nakoula. Charles Woods, the father of former Navy SEAL Tyrone Woods, says that Clinton blamed the video and even told him that she was going to have Nakoula arrested. Nakoula was, in fact, arrested. Similarly, Kate Quigley, the sister of Glen

A hallmark of Obama´s presidency since his early days in office has been his habit of pitting American citizens against each other: Democrats vs. Republicans, blacks vs. whites, rich vs. poor, climate change alarmists vs. climate change skeptics, gay vs. straight, etc. It was shocking at first. Seven years in, it is depressingly expected of the Community-Organizer-in-Chief. In his weekly address, released Friday, Obama vowed to spend his final year in office seeking ways to impose gun control policies via executive fiat, and urged American citizens to stand up against groups like the NRA — which, of course, is made

First it was Hillary Clinton’s “damn emails” that Bernie Sanders said Americans were sick and tired of hearing about. Now it’s Bill Clinton’s sex life. “We have more things to worry about than Bill Clinton’s sexual life,” Sanders said on ABC’s “This Week” Sunday. The Vermont senator and Democratic presidential hopeful repeated the line on CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday. “I think we’ve got more important things to worry about in this country than Bill Clinton’s sex life,” he said. Sanders was asked about Republican frontrunner Donald Trump’s suggestion that the former president’s sexual past is fair game — and
