On Muslims, Democrats find an
unlikely ally: George W. Bush

Taunted by Republicans to declare war on “radical Islamic terrorism,” Democrats are turning to an unlikely ally: George W. Bush. President Barack Obama, under pressure to be more aggressive on terrorism, regularly cites his predecessor´s refusal to demonize Muslims or play into the notion of a clash between Islam and the West. It´s a striking endorsement from a president whose political rise was predicated on opposition to the Iraq war and Bush´s hawkish approach in the Middle East. As Hillary Clinton put it, “George W. Bush was right.”

Republican presidential candidate Chris Christie has received mixed reviews among gun rights advocates in a key primary state for regulatory changes he backed this week in his home state of New Jersey. Two groups said the proposals show his continued progress in promoting gun rights. Another said they didn´t amount to anything. Christie, who has been seeking to counter his image among some voters as weak on gun rights, endorsed the recommendations of a commission he established to examine his state´s strict permitting and purchase regulations.

In a Tuesday morning interview with radio host Bill Bennett, House Speaker Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) implied that prominent conservative lawmakers have helped spread “misinformation” about his $1.1 trillion omnibus spending package–a bill which presumptive Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer described as “a great victory for the principles Democrats stand for.” Ryan specifically condemned what he termed “hyperbole” surrounding immigration provisions contained within his 2,009 page bill, which fully funds all visa and refugee programs for Muslim immigrants–including the President’s Muslim refugee expansion.

President Obama was flying over Los Angeles in June as he listened to the first accounts from a courtroom in Charleston, S.C., where family members of nine dead parishioners who were gunned down at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church had just addressed the accused killer. He heard the words of a daughter who had lost her mother: “May God forgive you. I forgive you.” He listened to the plea of a mother who had lost her son: “Every fiber in my body hurts .?.?. but may God have mercy on you.” The president paused, the thump of the helicopter’s blades

After six solid months of Republican after Republican attacking Donald Trump—and Trump nailing them back—some Republicans, especially Rubio supporters, continue to blame Ted Cruz for losing their support because he won’t attack Trump. Leon Wolf of RedState made the most honest case for why his ire continues to be raised for Cruz in “Ted Cruz Has a Problem.” Wolf, an obvious Rubio supporter, can’t get over the fact that Cruz won’t attack Trump like Wolf believes Cruz is attacking Rubio. “It’s not just that Cruz disagreed with Rubio. It’s that his disagreement was laced with biting sarcasm and personal attacks,”

A whole host of pre-holiday polls show that Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) is about to have a very merry Christmas. For the first time since the collapse of Ben Carson, Donald Trump has some real competition. Nationally, a new Quinnipiac poll shows Trump leading with 28%, but the Texas Republican Senator is right on his heels with 24% support. This same Quinnipiac poll shows Cruz tied with Hillary Clinton at 44%. Trump loses to Clinton 40% to 47%. What’s interesting is that Clinton is a very well known figure, one of the most famous politicians in the country, and even

Sarah Palin has given Tina Fey a taste of her own medicine. The former Republican vice presidential candidate has portrayed her liberal-minded celebrity doppelganger in a “trailer” for “31 Rock,” a fictitious version of Fey’s Emmy-winning NBC sitcom. The parody video, which was released by conservative news site Independent Journal, follows Lynn Melon (Palin), a television writer in New York City who struggles to find a balance between political correctness and her values. While donning glasses and clothing similar to Fey’s Liz Lemon character from “30 Rock,” Palin’s character identifies her “safe space” and demands a Big Gulp as she

In just a year, overdose deaths from opioid painkillers and heroin jumped 14%, hitting record levels in 2014, according to a new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report released Friday. Between 2000 and 2014, nearly half a million Americans died from overdoses involving these drugs, which research suggests act similarly in the brain. The most commonly prescribed opioid painkillers — like oxycodone and hydrocodone — were involved in more overdose deaths than any other type of the drug. Those deaths rose by 9%. “The increasing number of deaths from opioid overdose is alarming,” CDC Director Tom Frieden said in

According to a study by US Energy Department’s Energy Information Administration (EIA), decorative lights account for 6.6 billion kilowatt hours of electricity consumption every year in the United States. And that’s just 0.2% of the country’s total electricity usage – but it could run 14 million refrigerators. Lights at home are probably the most visible

As this will be my last offering here until the Iowa caucuses are almost upon us, I will try to cobble together some election predictions. The Republicans should win. Since the big Republican series of victories through and after the Civil War, ending in Cleveland’s first election in 1884, a party has won three consecutive presidential elections only when the incumbent was very popular at the end of the second term or when there were unusual encumbrances to a change. Theodore Roosevelt won a third Republican term in 1904, but was a very popular incumbent, having had almost a full term after the assassination of

MINNEAPOLIS — The Mall of America was used as “a decoy” to start a protest that quickly moved to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and blocked a terminal on a busy holiday travel day, one organizer of the demonstration said. After starting 2015 as the presumptive front-runner with a huge bankroll, Jeb Bush has to be ending the year wondering what went wrong with his presidential campaign, what happened to his Republican Party and where all his money went. Mr. Bush and his super PAC burned through more than half of the $133 million they raised in the first three quarters this year. The return on that investment has been a drop in polls from about 15 percent when he entered the race in June to about 4 percent in recent surveys.
