During Thursday’s press briefing, White House spokesman Josh Earnest was asked about the record sales of firearms on Black Friday, apparently in response to the San Bernardino murders. He responded that this fact is “ironic” and “tragic”: “Q. … And I just wonder if the President feels as if what’s happened may actually be giving motivation or momentum to gun rights advocates rather than his position. The truth is that the democrats and their leader, the little would be dictator, realize their dream of transforming the country into a communist totalitarian government will be very difficult if the citizens are armed. But they cannot say that, so they dance around with all this BS about being concerned by ´lots of innocent Americans being killed´. It is apparent they are not really concerned about this, as they refuse to do anything substantial to solve the problem other than ´gun control´, which would have little or no effect on the murder rate as proven by the murder rates in places that have strict gun control laws. In fact, during Fast and Furious they actually facilitated the murder of many innocent people.
Fortunately, most of the people are finally getting wise to this.

The Not So Secret Plan

Oh, that´s just great: “With Donald Trump’s ruinous domination of the Republican primary polls showing no signs of abating, top leaders in the GOP are reportedly now preparing for the possibility of a contentious brokered convention next year in Cleveland. If that happens, a small group of wealthy donors and die-hard loyalists close to Mitt Romney will be ready with a strategy to win him the nomination from the convention floor… Last month, the Washington Post noted, in a story about the Trump panic consuming the GOP establishment, that friends of Romney had “mapped out a strategy for a late entry to

In the Washington Post, Paul Farhi writes: “Thanks to Trump, fringe news enters the mainstream.” Farhi begins by describing Donald Trump’s interview with Alex Jones of InfoWars. I agree that Jones is a fringe character. But it turns out that in Farhi’s mind, “fringe” includes pretty much anyone he disagrees with. Many of Trump’s more controversial assertions since he declared for president have come from the murky swamp of right-wing, libertarian and flat-out paranoid sources that have proliferated and thrived as the Internet and social media have grown. No mention of the swamp of left-wing sources that have proliferated on the internet.

Sinatra: America’s definitive voice

When it comes to the birth of American geniuses, 1915 was a very good year. This year marks the centenary of Orson Welles, Arthur Miller, Saul Bellow and, today, the guy who gave eternal life to the Great American Songbook — Frank Sinatra. Bellow and Sinatra also have something in common more important and remarkable than their birth year, their affinity for fedoras, their decades-long political drift from left to right and their tempestuous personal lives. It wasn’t until 1953 that each found his voice. “The Adventures of Augie March,” the Bellow novel published that year, marks the real beginning of Bellow’s distinctive

TAMPA — With a backdrop of terrorism in California, mass shootings on college campuses and jihad in Paris, a handful of Florida sheriffs are urging citizens to arm themselves to be the first line of defense in such attacks. That has outraged gun control advocates, who say the public is in more – not less – danger when there are more guns are on the street. The debate between gun advocates and gun control supporters got new traction in recent days with some sheriffs suggesting more citizens should carry guns to protect themselves and others in case of terrorist attacks or mass

A specter is haunting politics. Barbara Streisand told the Hollywood Reporter “‘this can’t be happening,’ … in disbelief about the ascendant candidacy of Republican primary front-runner Donald Trump.” The same goes for Mark Zuckerberg who received a Facebook “friend” from Recep Erdogan. (Snip) There´s no denying something´s got the GOP frontrunners spooked. “Speaking to a small crowd at a New York City fundraiser, Republican Sen. Ted Cruz (Texas) questioned whether Donald Trump has the “judgment” to be commander in chief and said that he would not be comfortable with Trump having his ´finger on the button.´” Nor is it only

Something has changed. Last week my wife said to me, “I think I’d like to get a gun.” By which she meant a gun she can carry with her. If my wife were from Texas, this might not be surprising. But she is from Australia, a country which for two decades has had restrictive firearms laws and whose citizens largely do not understand Americans’ commitment to protecting gun rights. She has long been politely but barely tolerant of my interest in guns, of the fact that I have more than a few of them, and of my treating target practice as something

Obama´s “Tolerable Level of Terrorism”

“Round up the usual suspects” was the brunt of President Obama’s address to the American public after last week’s San Bernardino massacre. Obama offered nothing new, only “airstrikes, Special Forces, and working with local forces who are fighting to regain control of their own country” in the Levant. Like his French counterpart Francois Hollande, Obama thinks that a certain level of terrorism is tolerable, and far preferable to the bloody and difficult work of rooting out jihadist terrorism entirely. There is something to be said for the notion of a tolerable level of terrorism, but neither Obama nor Hollande are

You might not have noticed this, but on Monday morning Monmouth University released a poll on the GOP primary race in Iowa that showed Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) vaulting into first place with 24 percent of the vote, five points ahead of the supposed GOP frontrunner Donald Trump. You might not have noticed it, because by Monday afternoon Trump had put out a bombshell of a statement calling for a ban on entry into the United States of any and all Muslims until the government “figures out what the hell is going on.” No more were there headlines about Cruz’s quiet

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — A burglary suspect was able to escape deputies, but not a hungry 11-foot alligator, Brevard County authorities said. Matthew Riggins’ body was identified on Monday after he was found in a Barefoot Bay lake on Nov. 23. Investigators said Riggins drowned as a result of an alligator attack while running from deputies. Investigators said Riggins told his girlfriend on Nov. 13 that he and another man were going to burglarize homes in the area of Tequesta Drive in Barefoot Bay. Watching Obama´s speech Sunday night, it occurred to me that we are watching the death of a bad idea. The idea that there is no moral truth — and that therefore no one culture is better than any other — and that therefore any dominant culture must have become dominant through injustice — and that therefore the dominant west is to blame for the rest of the world´s ills — follows from a certain strain of western thought, call it the Nietzschean strain. It is incorrect and it has failed and now it´s crumbling. Under the duress of mounting evidence,

Donald Trumps proposal to bar Muslims from entering the US is, as Senator Ted Cruz points out, manifestly wrong but also emotionally resonant. Amy Davidson of the New Yorker came face to face with this contradiction after noting the approving crowds which cheered Trump´s plans in South Carolina on Monday night. How can a wrong idea be resonant? The first datum to acknowledge is that Trump is not a entirely alone in his views. A large part of the French electorate has taken leave of its senses just like Trump. The National Front has made spectacular electoral gains in France, partly

It is a mistake of historians and biographers to ascribe to a person one particular motive force, and then attribute every subsequent action of theirs to that personality trait. In politics, we compound this error by insisting that politicians act only or primarily because they want to get re-elected. But boy, if persistent and deep insecurity doesn´t push Donald Trump towards those microphones, I don´t know what does. I don´t think it´s narcissism. Now, of course we all suffer from imposter syndrome, which is the fear that our true level of capability will be exposed and our ability to BS our way

There’s a tendency in politics to mistake personal animosity for ideological animosity. Consider Bill Clinton. His staggering dishonesty, tackiness, and scorn for the rule of law aroused a lot of anger from the Right. But he wasn’t really that left-wing. Oh, he was certainly more liberal in his heart than he let on, but he also worked from the assumption that this was a center-right country, and that limited what he could get away with. Clinton ran for president the first time by “triangulating” against the base of his own party. He took time off from the campaign to oversee
