PHNOM PENH: From glitzy malls and high-rise flats to five-star hotels, a luxury building boom in Phnom Penh is transforming a capital once reduced to a ghost town into one of Asia´s fastest growing cities. Inside the recently opened Aeon Mall in the heart of Phnom Penh, Cambodia´s first mega shopping centre, shoppers and curious residents flock to see the latest Levi´s and Giordano handbags, snapping selfies in front of a giant Christmas tree. It is a common scene across much of Southeast Asia but was previously unimaginable for many in Cambodia where around 20 percent of people still live on

Comments:
Trying not to be a dump anymore, famous as it is for its skull piles.

Check out the photos – doncha love the way these tropical Buddhist Asians absolutely have to have a Christmas tree? LOL!

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama said on Thursday that the economic embargo imposed by the United States on Cuba in 1962 is “the legacy of a failed policy,” once again urging Congress to lift it on the first anniversary of the launching of a process of rapprochement and bilateral normalization of relations. In a statement issued on the anniversary of the policy shift, Obama also reiterated that “change” in Cuba will not occur “overnight” and that full normalization of relations “will be a long journey.” Obama emphasized the “important steps” that have been taken over the past year to normalize

GALT, CALIF. – A worker at a Northern California recycling center saved a tiny kitten from certain death when he spotted the animal heading down a conveyor belt. Tony Miranda tells television station KCRA that he was sorting recyclables Tuesday when he found the pink-nosed, white-pawed cat between the debris and scooped it up. It´s not clear how the kitten got in with the trash, but it may have survived a ride in a dump truck before a tractor pushed it onto one of two conveyer belts. A call went out to employees of Cal-Waste Recovery Systems that a baby

HAVANA – Cuban President Raúl Castro urged the U.S. government Friday to halt radio and television broadcasts aimed at the island and other programs that Cuba considers harmful while reiterating that he is interested in deepening the thaw in relations with the United States. The comment came in Castro´s first review of the rapprochement that he and U.S. President Barack Obama began a year ago. In a rare broadcast of his speech on state television, the 84-year-old leader said, “Cuba will continue insisting that to achieve the normalization of relations it is imperative that the government of the United States remove all

SANTA FE, N.M. – New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez is apologizing for her staff´s conduct at her annual holiday party at a downtown Santa Fe hotel. A noise complaint resulted in police responding to one of her staffer´s rooms. In a statement Friday night, Martinez said someone threw snowballs from a hotel balcony and says that behavior is unacceptable. Martinez also said she made a mistake by speaking to the hotel receptionist and asking about the noise complaint. The governor said she shouldn´t have gotten involved in trying to resolve the situation and she should have handled it differently. Martinez said she was holding her

The day after a Brazilian judge ordered the suspension of the Whatsapp cell-phone chat and voice service for 48 hours, cutting off millions of users from one of the country’s most popular communication services, another judge overturned the ban. Brazilians had joined in black humor and outrage and tech giants expressed worry over the state´s heavy hand Thursday after a judge banned the service for 48 hours. It is so widely used in Brazil that people often ask for “your WhatsApp” rather than your number. The ban began at midnight Wednesday. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, who had described this as a

BERLIN – A medical document shows that Adolf Hitler only had one testicle, German media said on Saturday, suggesting there is some truth after all to a popular British song that says the dictator had “only got one ball”. There has long been speculation that Hitler was missing one testicle, with rumors circulating that he lost the other one during the Battle of the Somme in the First World War. But a medical record from the time when Hitler was put in prison after the failed Munich beer hall putsch in 1923 shows he suffered from “right-side cryptorchidism” – a

Some people say that you can make anything sound better when it’s said with an elegant English accent. British comedian Peter Serafinowicz decided to put this theory to the test, by posing a question to the world: “What if Donald Trump had elocution lessons?” Serafinowicz took it upon himself to find out, by dubbing over a recent interview the mogul did on Fox News Sunday, where he threw a few barbs towards Hillary Clinton and talked about how great he’ll be with Hispanics. So what do you think? Does Trump sound like a British aristocrat, or a villain that walked

Maria Alekhina, member of the feminist punk rock group Pussy Riot, sat for an interview yesterday about her thoughts on Vladimir Putin‘s compliments of Donald Trump. Alekhina warned that American attitudes to the frontrunner are very similar to those who didn’t think much of Putin before his reign. She expressed deep concern about those who still think of Trump as a joke, and said that those who vote for him are voting for an Americanized version of the Russian president. Pussy Riot was the band that achieved infamy in Russia over a year ago for speaking out against Putin’s various

One World Government: Hedge fund manager and “stateless statesman” George Soros has been shoring up the European Union, advocating for it as the embodiment of his Open Society vision and, now, as a bulwark against a resurgent, menacing Russia. He gets it wrong on every front. The famous left-wing speculator, who made himself a billionaire by shorting the British pound in 1992, ironically is now billing himself as an advocate for Britain by trying to persuade British voters to say “yes” to staying in the European Union in an upcoming referendum. In a Financial Times op-ed Wednesday, Soros said the EU had

NEW YORK — Vladimir Putin’s public support of Donald Trump this week seemed to come out of the blue but it was a long time coming. Pro-Kremlin Twitter accounts have been touting a Trump presidency for months. As far back as Aug. 7, the Kremlin’s troll-in-chief, @rykov (ex-Duma deputy Konstantin Rykov), tweeted a reply to ex-US ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul, who had said how much he enjoyed the Republican debate that evening, but was putting his support behind Hillary Clinton. Rykov told McFaul, tagging Clinton as well, “vote for @realDonaldTrump Michael” and followed up by saying, in Russian, “I haven’t watched

Less than two months before voting starts in Iowa, Donald Trump remains the most popular candidate among Republicans. Most observers said it wouldn´t happen, couldn´t happen. A few days after The Donald´s announcement, we wrote a column surveying the GOP field. We didn´t even include Trump. Boy were we wrong. And so, as observers and historians of conservatism, we ask: Why is this man still here? Mediocre performances in several debates, an endless string of absurd remarks, continued failure (it increasingly looks like a refusal) to articulate a policy agenda and clear evidence that he has no history of political commitment

Although Jeb Bush has been railing against Donald Trump all week, he still had more to say on Saturday, uttering perhaps his strongest comments yet about the Republican presidential front-runner. “Just one other thing — I gotta get this off my chest — Donald Trump is a jerk,” Bush said to laughter and applause at his town hall Contoocook, New Hampshire. Tuesday´s debate wasn´t boring, exactly. There was a good deal of substance and some demolition derby, too. Also, there was some real news toward the end when Trump doubled down on staying in the Republican party and not running a third-party candidacy if someone else is the nominee. But I don´t know that the debate altered the strategic balance of power in this race in any meaningful way. But it did get me thinking about the general election. To my mind, the most likely nominees, in descending order of probability, are Rubio, Cruz, and Trump. And watching them, it struck me

The strangest political story of the year has been the rise of Donald Trump, who has discovered a potent formula. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Friday warned Republican voters to steer clear of nominating Tea Party candidates who can’t win in next year’s general election. “The way you have a good election year is to nominate people who can win,” he told reporters during his final Capitol Hill press conference of 2015. He urged Republican primary voters to avoid the mistakes of the past, mentioning several Tea Party candidates who went down in flames in recent Senate elections. “What we did in 2014 was we didn’t have more Christine O’Donnell’s, Sharron Angles, Richard Mourdocks or Todd Akins. It is the second road in Palm Beach County to be named in honor of the 44th president, county officials said. Two years ago, Pahokee in western Palm Beach County renamed East First Street to Barack Obama Boulevard. Former Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel revealed in an extensive interview published Friday that he had approved plans to strike Damascus with Tomahawk cruise missiles after Syria’s Bashar al-Assad crossed the “red line” by using chemical weapons – but President Obama told him to stand down. The interview with Foreign Policy comes nearly a year after his acrimonious exit from the Obama administration. Still smarting from the circumstances of his departure, Hagel told Foreign Policy that the White House tried to “destroy” him even after he resigned. The interview explored the tensions between Hagel and others on Obama’s team, but offered
