Bombastic polemicist Ann Coulter is in a tizzy because President-elect Donald Trump may not be as harsh on illegal immigrants as Coulter wants him to be.
Regarding Trump’s immigration policy, Coulter tweeted the following:
Exactly what Coulter is calling a sell-out is unclear in her tweet, but she could be responding to what Trump said during an interview with the CBS program 60 Minutes:
“President-elect Donald Trump’s hard-line immigration stance was a central part of his campaign message in 2016 — and he said in an interview Sunday that he plans to immediately deport approximately 2 to 3 million undocumented immigrants. “What we are going to do is get the people that are criminal and have criminal records, gang members, drug dealers, where a lot of these people, probably 2 million, it could be even 3 million, we are getting them out of our country or we are going to incarcerate,” Trump said in an interview with CBS’ “60 Minutes.” “But we’re getting them out of our country, they’re here illegally.” He continued by saying that after the border is “secure,” immigration officials will begin to make a “determination” about the remaining undocumented immigrants in the U.S.”
In his statement to 60 Minutes, Trump points out the need to deport criminals who are in the USA illegally. Even Democrats and liberals can see the logic in doing that.
Trump also points out the need to secure the USA’s southern border before contemplating the fate of people who snuck across the border but who have been law-abiding since then. Even advocates for immigration reform can see the logic of securing the border first. To do the opposite would be putting the cart before the horse.
Then again, Ann Coulter isn’t exactly the sharpest tool in the shed. In January 2016, The Hill reported the following:
“[SC Gov.] Haley broke with some in the Republican Party when she called for her state to stop displaying the Confederate flag. Coulter said that Haley was unqualified to deal with the flag because she’s an “immigrant.” “I’d really like to like Nikki Haley since she is a Republican, but on the other hand, she’s an immigrant and does not understand America’s history,” Coulter said in July.”
Coulter’s claim about Gov. Haley’s place of origin is reflected in this January 2016 tweet by Coulter:
Gov. Haley was born and raised in South Carolina.
Donald Trump should deport Ann Coulter instead. After all, a person born in New York City and raised in Connecticut is obviously an immigrant who doesn’t understand what is possible and what should be prioritized when it comes to immigration policy.
Radio personality and Trump supporter Bill Mitchell isn’t putting up with Coulter’s nonsense, as Mitchell indicates in some of his twitter posts.
Mitchell is correct to scold Coulter. Being on the political Right doesn’t mean that one is always right, and Coulter should be rebuked whenever she says something that is outrageous.
Yes, Ann Coulter is entertaining in the same way that the late Morton Downey, Jr. was entertaining. Perhaps in time Coulter’s shtick will be cancelled, too.
