Good morning, my friends! I’m checking in with a simple and FREE DIY home decor project that will rock your world! We all know that everyone goes gaga for boxwood. It’s beautiful, real and hard to kill. I know this first hand because I’ve killed everything else, including succulents, and yet my boxwood wreath that I bought last year is still beautiful.
I also think boxwood bushes are oh so adorable, so I planted some a couple of years ago when we updated our front flower beds. All this time I kept thinking that I should take some clippings and make something with it, but the inspiration never came.
Fast forward to this year’s autumn mantel.
I’ve been adding things and tweaking it for a few weeks now. The other day I looked at it and realized I wanted something like a thin boxwood wreath on it. But I’ll be honest, we don’t have it in our budget to buy another home decor item this month. Yes, we live on a budget and a pretty strict one at that, so spending $80 on a wreath when it’s not there is not going to happen.
Then I remember this post from my friend Kelly. Ahhh! I could make my very own boxwood wreath for FREE and it would be exactly what I want. And if you aren’t so lucky to have a boxwood bush in your yard, then I highly recommend you go get one this weekend and plant it pronto. They are so cute and handy!
And you’ll have free boxwood clippings for life!
Oh, and I had the floral wire and wire cutter already, so I guess those two don’t make it free, but they are cheap. And once you have them, the cutters will last a long time (forever, probably) and the wire lasts a long time, too!
Here’s what you’ll need:
1. Wire hanger (or other round wreath form)
2. Floral wire
3. Floral Wire Cutter
4. boxwood clippings
5. Optional: if you use a wire hanger, you’ll need something to connect the ends.
Instructions:
1. Untwist the wire hanger and shape it into a circle. I used some clear packing tape to hold the ends together, but the floral wire would work, too.
2. Cut a piece of floral wire and wrap the clippings to the wreath frame.
3. Continue to wrap leaves until you achieved the desired thickness. I wrapped about 2 clippings on top of each other before it was the thickness I liked. I wanted a medium-filled wreath. Not too bushy, but not sparse, either.
4. Sit back and admire your super simple and free new wreath! So cute!!
I’m not quite finished with my mantel yet, but it’s close. I’m not sure what else it needs, but I know it will come to me soon. I’ll be sure to share when it’s ready!
